Hot 97 FM (New York) makes fun of Tsunami victims copied and pasted from okayplayer.com:
http://www.hiphopmusic.co...00759.html For the last week New York's Hot 97 has been running a hideously unfunny and offensive skit named the "Tsunami Song," that ridicules the victims of the Tsunami as "chinks" whose children will now be sold into child slavery. It's being played on the station's morning show, hosted by Miss Jones. It's also featured on their website, on the right side of the page: http://www.hot97.com/airs...origin=nav And this is a direct link to the mp3: http://www.hot97.com/av/a...onesia.mp3 Here are some choice lyrics: "..All at once you could hear the screaming chinks and no one was safe from the wave there were africans drowning, little chinamen swept away you could hear god laughing, "swim you bitches swim" So now you're screwed, it's the Tsunami you better run or kiss your ass away, go find your mommy I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head and now the children will be sold to child slavery..." Uhh, yeah. Har de har har. You may know that one of that show's other hosts, Miss Info, is Asian. She voiced her displeasure with the skit and got into a heated on-air argument with Miss Jones about it. But so far Hot 97 hasn't acknowledged that there's anything wrong with it, and they continue to air it everyday. As a New Yorker, as a radio person, and as a hip-hop fan I am ashamed and disgusted that Hot 97 is allowing this to broadcast on their airwaves. If you feel the same way you can let them know here: HOT 97 395 Hudson St. 7th Fl. New York, NY 10014 (212) 229-9797 hot97@hot97.com The Org is the short yellow bus of the Prince Internet fan community.

See, this is the sort of stuff the FCC should be investigating, not whether Howard Stern said "shit" today.

It seems to be down now, because there's no trace for it anywhere on their website.

Miss Jones should know better. (I'm not a very big Jonesie fan to begin with. I'd rather see Joe Budden in her place.) If I recall correctly, she got really bent out of shape when (The Evil) Star and Buc Wild pulled a similarly tasteless stunt a few years ago. I think it was one of the reasons she left. Now she's back. And Star and BW are back in New York at Power 105.1. They're on during the same time slot, too. Maybe the stations are competing to see who can out shock who? (Hot 97 even brought back SmackFest.)

Yeah, cuz stupid shit never happens anywhere else. Stupid shit DOES happen everywhere. But, we seem particularly adept at being offensive at the wrong moment in the US. The sad thing is it's idiots like these, who I do believe are the minority, that get reported on and continue to give the US the bad rep it has around the world.

That's just it, tho...it's not "we" who are doing it...out of a population of well over 250 million, it's to be expected that at least some of us are gonna act like idiots on any given day...of course for every person like this, there are literally thousands who show the wonderful side of our country...whether or not they make headlines (as you pointed out, it rarely does) or end up as a topic on a thread here at P.org probably speaks more about us as humans than it does about the U.S. itself...

Yeah, but this is the kind of "publicity" that could actually end up costing them money, thus negating their capitalistic desires...lol

For as much as people like to preach "positivity" it seems to always be more fun and intriguing and natural to rip things/people apart.

I guarantee you more people are listening because of this i can also guarantee they have lost listeners and i for one will never listen to that station due to their lack of compassion and utter disgusting policies. i don't just blame the ignorant and assinine DJ...i also blame the producers and station director/owner, they are just as much to blame if not more for allowing such a disgrace to humanity continue. this sickens me. you're only as old as you feel..............so how old do i feel

sweetserene said: Byron said: Yeah, but this is the kind of "publicity" that could actually end up costing them money, thus negating their capitalistic desires...lol How? I guarantee you more people are listening because of this Several ways: 1) If it's offensive enough, pressure gets put on both the station and its sponsors about taking some disciplinary measures... 2) Even without pressure, sponsors could choose to yank their advertising, again costing revenue... 3) Again, even without pressure, the person who created and aired the offending song could have been fired, thus eliminating their revenue completely...lol 4) Even without wanting to add pressure or see disciplinary actions taken, listeners could have been turned off enough to have their emotions effect how they now saw this personality and their show...many, MANY actors in hollywood have seen their box office power decrease after taking stances which many within the viewing public disagreed with... 5) Even if none of the above things were to happen, it's usually the case that anyone who needs an offensive "bit" like this to garner higher ratings, will only get higher ratings for a brief moment because they have nothing beyond that momentary offensive act to offer...if they did, they wouldn't need the offending act to begin with. And it's not unusual for ratings to actually drop afterwards, to level below what they were before the offending act...so they take one step forward, and two steps back...the only other alternative is to keep upping the ante, keep finding more and more ways to air "questionable" material, since they feel they need to keep those new listeners/viewers who only tuned in because of the last offending act...listeners/viewers like that tend to move on from one "accident" to another, they aren't all that loyal...

My feeling is that probably a lot if not almost all of their base thought it was funny or didn't care.
This is a disgusting thing- although it doesn't actually hurt anyone directly, it is scummy and appeals to people's uglier side for profit. So let's not give them what they want. ?

I cant believe someone would make something like this.

I said this on the music board befor ethe thread was closed:
"I thought it was kind of funny... I guess you can't say something like that without exlaining yourself: It's not like they caused the tsunami, it happened. Joking about it didn't kill anyone neither will it bring someone back. So what's the big deal? no harm no foul." I just want to clarify. I think it's funny because it's a parody of those phony ass celebrity benefits. Let's face it people are still starving in Africa, genocides occurred after the "We are the World" and "Live Aid" shams. I think they were more about the artists getting face time and saying "look at me, I'm a caring" person to win more fans than actually helping people. maybe I'm looking at it wrong. I don't think death is funny, children losing their parents is definitely nothing to laugh at. The sad part is a lot of the orphans are probably going to be forced in to the human sex slave trade or prostitution. It's a difficult, emotional situation all around because it's senseless too and destroyed so many futures but I still think the song was kind of funny. My more cynical side will probably say people who think it's nothing to laugh at suffer from the same disorder that a lot of the artists who contributed to those benefits I named earlier... (wait, I just typed that last sentence to start a debate. That wasn't right, sorry.)
