Oh, Mach, do it! Adopt him! Save him from doggie heaven! I'm serious. Greyhounds are the sweetest dogs and have the sweetest dispositions. They're treated so cruelly: made to race, chase rabbits and then destoyed after the race organizers and the dog owners no longer find that fast and of no use to them. I have an Italian Greyhound. They miniature versions the the bigger guys. He only weighs 7 pounds. He the sweetest most affectionate dog. Most greyounds are docile, they don't bark a lot, don't shed much and are veryn loyal to their owners. If you are serious about adopting a greyhound, then I say go for it. I don't think you'll regret it or be dissapointed. here are some pictures of my baby. His name is Spike. I gave him a tough guy name because he has the attitude to go with it. (Sorry the picture of his face is so big - I don't know how to resize it).

One of my friends adopted a greyhound they were going to kill because it was no longer a good enough racing dog. She is the sweetest most wonderful loving dog.
You have to be aware of some things though. These dogs need lots of exercise. They naturally want to chase and they have lots of energy. Also, if the dog has been used as a racing dog you are going to have to patiently work with it because it probably hasn't had the best treatment. My friends dog had some trust issues because it was abused but he stuck with her and she's as wonderful as can be. I love these dogs. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

They're very sweet dogs, and like Supa said, they sometimes need some work. Another thing to consider (especially if you live in a multi-floor unit) is that most track dogs DO NOT handle stairs well at first. It takes quite a bit of getting used to. But if you're up to the task, go for it. Very pretty!

a friend of mine adopted one, and is working on getting him certified as a therapy dog.
the most fascinating thing i learned from him was that racing greyhounds never learn how to walk up or down stairs, and that it takes them a while to figure it out. oops, Shreds... i took too long to post this and just now saw that you already talked about it... i'd love to adopt one, they are definitely in need of a good home, after all they've been through. When we lived in arizona there was a whole society to rescue the greyhounds. This gentleman I worked with had 4. When he got them they had severe digestive problems, they were used to being fed a certain thing, not healthy for them but cheap, they were used to eating in a certain way, and were very very very skittish. He spent lots and lots of time with them, would rotate bringing them to work with him. Got them all on some quality food and would run them for miles and miles. The greyhounds like the Borsoi like to course and they need lots of off lead time to just run run run, Hope you live near a field or large enclosed area where you can let him? off the leash to run. They are the sweetest most loving dog, once you build that trust. Please if you have the heart and the time do adopt one, it will be worth the work. If there is some sort of support network where you live you may want to talk to other owners so you can get all set up for your dog.
good luck keep us posted We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou

[ Over here those miniature greyhounds are called Whippets, I didnt know that they are also called Italian Greyhounds!! Wow!! U learn something new everyday!! Actually, the Whippet is not the same as an Italian greyhound. They're the midsize version of the greyhound. The biggest in size is the greyhound, then the whippest, and then the Italian greyhound. And here's a bit of trivia: the Italian greyhound is not really from Italy. It's actually from Egypt. Whe Italy invaded Egypt, they took everything, so that how they actually became to be known as Italian greyhounds.

No. I sure hope I get the chance to. The first think I'd do is spank it.

Aren't you witty? "Spank the monkey" I saw one in person, he was doing an act with a trainer. He was sooo cute and so intelligent. And no, I didn't spank him. I wish I had pictures.

Can't you see the love in her eyes?? Whenever I come over she goes absolutely bonkers. She sees me walk in and the house turns into a race track where she'll run around the living room and then up the stairs and then back down before coming to greet me 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I LOVE Greyhounds! Working in the veterinary industry, I've found them to be some of the nicest dogs. They can be shy and timid sometimes, but they are very sweet and loving, and I think very beautiful. And it's so nice to adopt an ex-racer.
(BTW, Whippets and Italian Greyhounds are different breeds. Whippets are larger.)

Greyhounds are really great.I have friends who adopted one and their only problem was their cats were jealous of him and peed on his bed all the time. So we took the cats and they adopted another Greyhound The cats got along with the Border Collie we had at that time, she loved to play with them..
Seriously, they are great but you always have to be aware that they are sight hounds and can see great distances and chase things that you can't see.Other than that, not many problems.
