Why is Honesty such a lonely word?

Honesty
Billy Joel

If you search for tenderness
It isn't hard to find
You can have the love you need to live,
But if you look for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind
It always seems to be so hard to give.

Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue,
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you.

I can always find someone
To say they symphatize
If I wear my heart out on my sleeve,
But I don't want some pretty face
To tell me pretty lies
All I want is someone to believe

I can find a lover
I can find a friend
I can have security
Until the bitter end
Anyone can comfort me
With promises again
I know (I know), I know woh woh

When I'm deep inside of me
Don't be too concerned
I won't ask for nothin' while I'm gone,
But when I want sincerity
Tell me where else can I turn?
'Cause you're the one that I depend upon.

Honesty is neither pc, nor makes people like you most of the time. Before you disagree, this doesnt pertain to everyone. But it ring true most of the time. Disagree if you wish, but you know im right.

see this is why I created this thread. I get by in life by being honest and it works just fine, you just need to find the right people to be honest with. honesty CAN be a curse to those of whom have little moral fibre or ot can be a BLESSING to those with a true heart and dedication.

the only honesty is the honesty that comes from someone. honesty can't be judged or weighed. when that happens, someone is pressured to conform to someone else's truth...and that creates lies.

honesty is rare. you're the only person in your world who you can expect honesty from, i think.

In the workplace, honesty is requested, yet never well received. Too many times, you will be viewed as negative or confrontational. Unfortunately, honesty is very rarely the best policy. I learned this the hard way.

Not necessarily true at all. You can be honest with others and you can be honest in your relationship to the world of people out there, and the forces of the universe, and even with God. For every fake ass in the world there are a million more honest people.

you can't expect too much in this world, but you can rely on the fact that there are some, if not plenty of honest people out there who will be honest with you. i've experienced it most of my life, but I started this thread cause I've come across a few people lately who don't fit the criteria of honest.

There aren't many honest people.

I don't expect everyone to be honest.
My criteria for people are:
1) Fun
2) Smart
3) Nice (good)

Sometimes very good people lie, and for very good reason.
It doesn't help to tell a fat person their fat all the time.
Sometimes, telling them that it looks like the walking regimine
they're on is working is enough of a lie to keep them going.

Anyways, I think white lies are o.k. and they actually help sometimes.

I'm one of the most down to earth people one could ever meet.

That doesn't say much considering my choice for thread topics.
But I really am.

I just read some of yer discussion...seems to me that there is a difference between "Truth" and "Honesty" - honesty can be much more subjective...but which one is more important? hmm

The hardest part is being honest with yourself...I think we all find ways to avoid telling ourselves what we know to be true about our inner motivations behind our actions. Admitting everything to yourself about yourself is the healthiest and best way of bringing true honesty into your life and world...until you're able to do that, you'll just be looking for others to provide an honesty for you that you're unable to sincerely and profoundly provide for yourself.. rose

I don't think it's the being honest with yourself part that's hard. We all spend 24 hours as us, so it's not like we miss anything we do, or can realistically misinterpret our own motivations if we give even a minute's thought to our actions. What's difficult is being honest with ourselves and actually acting on that honesty.

Well, I meant that we see the faults in others far easier than we see the faults in ourselves...it's easier to convince ourselves that what we do isn't as bad as what others do to us. We just tend to rationalize our behavior at every level when we think about our own actions. Honesty isn't simply about telling others what is true or having them tell you what's truth, it's also about looking into the mirror and acknowledging all the truths about yourself to yourself. Many times we fail to do that, out of stubborness, fear, insecurity..what have you.

It's interesting that you say that....people can go many different ways in accepting the honestly human parts of themselves, especially when it hurts or when you think particular aspects of your "human-ness" should be frowned upon. That is when you get into trouble nod ...when you let go and look around you and realize that no one has it all sussed out, and you have a bit of humility mixed with conviction (I feel like that word is tainted now), then reflecting honesty becomes easier within yourself & with others....geebus I feel corny touched
