Unforgivable Blackness

Ken Burns does it again! worship

This documentary is unbelievable! Before seeing this I had only a superficial knowledge of Jack Johnson, I had no idea he had such an enormous effect on the entire nation. Shit, this man was unstoppable!! Now I understand why Miles Davis dedicated an album to this man. I can't wait to see the conclusion.

Cool. I just read an article about Jack Johnson in the paper last week. Very interesting story that no one seems to know because it hasnt been told. I intend on watching this documentary. PBS makes such good films.

Too bad, you missed the first half. I'm sure the second part will be just as good.
And yeah, after watching the doc you'll realize why his story hasn't been told to often. evillol Seriously, this is powerful stuff.

You know Ken Burns has a talent for milking all of his productions of every dime. nod

UptownDeb

Thanks for mentioning this!

Ken Burns was on tv the other day promoting this documentary. To give us an idea of how charismatic Johnson was Burns said, "If Jack Johnson were alive today, he'd be People's [magazine] 'Sexiest Man Alive.'" After that awesome quote I just HAD to watch it.

And while watching it I kept thinking, some of this sounds like legend. Johnson most definitely lived by his own rules.

Gosh, and how race was negotiated in the boxing ring and outside it...simply amazing.

Can't wait to catch part 2 tonight. thumbs up!

I heard this was supposed to be excellent... nod Wish I could have seen it.. confused

There was an editorial in the Los Angeles Times about this very documentary...or rather, it was about Johnson himself and the reactions around the country...they were ashamed of their editorial legacy at the Times when the 100 year-old commentary was brought to their attention by Burns.

.....and Mos Def's Black Jack Johnson project nod

Just saw this thread but I've already posted on another one that was actually started after this one http://www.prince.org/msg/100/130186

I've seen documentaries (haven't seen Burns' version yet though) about this great champion and it was amazing to learn the style in which he lived (and this man had STYLE with STEEL BALLS!), esp. considering the kind of society and times he must have had to contend with. All credit to him.

Hats off to you Mr. Johnson Sir! thumbs up!

We're probably gonna have to wait donkeys for Ken Burns' documentary to hit these shores (U.K.) confused
