Raise The Red Lantern

The WTF-thread made me think of this one again. Where as many people used the WTF-term in a negative way to share which movie they disliked because they could not get around the plot, or whatever, I used the term to hare the movies that blew me away.

I love this movie with a passion. The acting is superb. The story, the camera work. All of it. The fact that some scenes are acted without any text makes it even more beautiful to me.

For those who have not seen it; here the plot from www.imdb.com

Da hong deng long gao gao gua

China in the 1920's. After her fathers death, nineteen year old Songlian is forced to marry Chen Zuoqian, the lord of a powerfull family. Fifty year old Chen has already three wives, each of them living in seperate houses within the great castle. The competition between the wives is tough, as their master's attention carries power, status and priviligies. Each night Chen must decide which wife to spend the night with and a red lantern is lit infront of the house of his choice. And each wife schemes and plots to make sure it's hers. However, things get out of hand...

damn. my fav movie e.v.e.r. I can't watch it anymore now
that I've quit smoking though. I'll have to give it some
more time before I'll try with just tea and some food. I
loved this movie from the very first time I saw it. The
whole thing just smells of brilliance.

I LOVE that movie. I ran across it once years ago and never saw the ending. It was amazing. I remember it was all in subtitles. I wanted to see it again but didn't know the name of it. I will rent it tonight!

Aw, don;t box yourself on this one. It is not a movie that is on any radar.

Just take your time on it; it will transport you to another world and will have your attention in so many different ways...
