Russell, all of whom are cutting edge and inventive, and excepting almodovar's two wins for best foreign picture, but no director nod, not a nomination between them. Add Robert Altman to that list - 5 nominations and not a single win. Martin Scorsese has also never won. Those, in my opinion, are also overlooked. Back to your regularly scheduled thread... i'm not a big altman fan, as he is sooooo hit or miss. when he's good, he's BRILLIANT (mash, nashville, the player), but when he's bad he's GODAWFUL (pret-a-porter, beyond therapy, ect). that being said, he is a master when he's in his element, and he directs in a very unique style that can be astoundingly good, so yea, i can see altman. scorsese should have won in his early days for his brilliant work. i am not a big fan of the "well, okay, this movie we are nominating him for was shit, but he deserves it for the ones we should have given him before" school of thought that got him the nomination for gangs, which i thought was a horrid mess of a movie. the aviatar i rather enjoyed though. giving it to him for the weak latter day entries almost spits in the face of all the ones he should have gotten them for in early days. Scorcese not having an oscar is a crime. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Jamie gave the best acceptance speech of the night. Very cool. And he definitely deserved this award. Forget the Oscars -- can anyone say The Color Purple?? I'll never forgive "the Academy" for that -- 11 nominations and not one Oscar? Anyway, props to the Golden Globes for recognizing Foxx's talent and seeing that Jamie, like Prince said, not only played Ray Charles, but actually was Ray Charles in that movie! I took my ma to see it -- Ray Charles was her hero, and my ma ain't even black, dig it. She loved it and all the actors (especially the woman who played young Ray's momma).

I felt like ya kinda knew it was coming.. it was kinda like when Charlize won for Monster.. not that she didn't deserve it, but to me it seemed more so for the fact that there was a transition for Jamie... Wow, that was cool.
Jaime Foxx had a very cathartic moment up there. And I do believe they showed Prince at the end of the speech, and even HE looked a little choked up. Like I said, Cool.

I agree that it is hard to people to take him seriously (shit, Jim Carrey STILL can't get people to take him seriously!) but I have an idea he is going to have a good career ahead of him, even though every role isn't going to be a "Ray".

I was wondering the same thing. When he wins, he'll be considered the Oscar winner with the most embarassing tatoos! Cher will finally lose that title, which I'm sure she'll enjoy!

He's ALWAYS making jokes, so it's natural for people to feel like they're being set up for the funny. Once they realized he was serious they stopped laughing. Only reason I wasn't laughing along w/ them is b/c I knew about his grandmother & knew he would end w/ that so he was probably choked up & serious. It was an odd moment but that's life
