I just realized...one of the things that makes the movie have the "realism" and staying power that it does is because there's no real soundtrack to this movie. No background sounds to distract you or remind you that this is a movie, no rushed synth chords or overdramatic violins to tell you when you're supposed to be scare/nervous/sad/etc...everything just happens without musical cues, just like in real life.

Pagey

I saw this last week and I am still thinking about it. Talk about an exercise in tension. I am not sure I can even call it entertaining...disturbing is a better word

The movie gets much better as it progresses. The camera work, lighting, acting, and editing are awful in the beginning of the film. When I first started watching it, all I could think was "Im really gonna sit through an hour and a half of this shit?".

It seems like by the end of the film, the director kind of takes over and begins to compensate for the bad acting and the low quality footage, with some great editing. The storm scene was fantastic, and what the female lead does at the end was really powerful.

It's a scary movie, and it does an incredible job of holding your attention with the bare minimum.

The characters though - It was like Ken and Barbie leave their dream home, and hop in their brand new SUV, to go on a scuba diving vacation... they're so clammy and idealized, you almost want to see them die. It took me a while to warm up to them and at least feel sorry for them, and see them as real people.

Ironically, all it took for me to see them as "real" people was to see them left behind in the middle of the ocean...their reactions, tone of voice, arguments, their fears, their realizations, their expressions...were all very real to me. The time spent in the ocean makes up like 85% of the movie, so the short part leading up to that didn't really have too much time to get the audience to invest in them heavily...

There were some crude details, like when they were urinating, vomiting, etc... that, although kinda gross, made the whole scenario more realistic. The overall effect of their final moments worked better than jacks death in Titanic, IMO, and on a fraction of the budget.

just the 'movie' itsself is hard enough to think about, i cant even 'go there' and connect it to what the real people had to go through.

incredibly sad

I haven't seen this movie yet, although I am dying to see it at
the same time. I'm just affraid that I'll chicken out and won't
be able to watch it all the way through.

I almost pissed myself just watching the trailer for this movie
so I can't imagine being sucked into it movie style

eek

I have been on open water several times. It's a pretty humbling
experience for me each and every time. As soon as I've not got
earth beneath my feet anymore I become achingly aware of my own
mortality. And open water just scares the shit out of me.

It attracts me magically but at the same time scares me to the
point of madness.

The smaller the vessel, the more frightening the experience. It
one time scared me into a kind of shock. But that was when we'd
gone off the coast of France in a very little boat during dusk
and were kind of cut adrift on the atlantic for a bit.

Perhaps it would have helped if I hadn't been stuck on a boat
with 3 absolutely mad fuckers from England and 2 inbred French
aristocrats

But I'm drifting off right now biggrin

Oh the things we get ourselves into when we're young err
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
