I'm reading "Odd Thomas" by Dean Koontz.

Very entertaining.
I can't even tell you anything about the book or it ruins the fun.
But it is an awesome book--very creative.

It's actually a PREQUEL of sorts to LOTR. It is the history of Middle Earth through the ages, how it was created, etc. I can understand why your friend had trouble, it's not an easy read, mainly because it is strewn with a whole list of place names and names of people you HAVE to remember in order to read on. But as I say, if you refer to the glossary freqently then it is much easier and in my opinion quite enthralling.

I've read all the Narnia books 'cept "Horse and his Boy" and "Last Battle." "Magician's Nephew" is my favorite, I think. It's been a while.

I bought "Da Vinci Code" ages ago, but I haven't cracked it yet. I'm reading "Business Policy: Managing Strategic Processes" and the 2005 Tax Code right now, and they're as exciting as they sound.

A.S. Byatt wrote "Possession"...it's about a couple of researchers digging up evidence of a romance between a couple of Victorian poets. I think a crappy movie was made of it a year or two ago, but the book's supposed to be great.

And I liked "Horse and his Boy", but it wasn't the best by far. I like remembering the story more than I liked reading it, if that makes sense. Worth it to read, but kind of a drag in places. "Prince Caspian" is my absolute least favorite of all those books, though I wouldn't skip it either if I were reading all the C.S. Lewis books. I haven't gotten to "Last Battle" yet...I'm still getting through "Silver Chair".

My best recollection is that they do not show Aslan. But the creatures do look amazing, especially the minotaur! WETA, whom also did the creature effects for the Lord of the Rings movies, did the creatures for this one as well. My big fear with this movie is that they're going to try to make it into another LotR. They have some similarities, and I know CS Lewis and JRRRR Tolkein exchanged notes while writing these books, but I hope this movie is a work unto its own.

yeah, it would suck if the cs lewis narnia books were turned into LoTR clones...these movies should have a storybook quality to them and, if anything, should have a kind of "harry potter" feel moreso than a swords and sorcerers kinda mood. i mean, santa claus is in "the lion, the witch and the wardrobe", for pete's sake!
