Is There Ever A Time To Tell Your Employer....

....that you are looking for another job?

Guys, I need your opinions. I got a new job that has sucked from day one, about two months ago. Right now, I am looking for a new job. I would not even consider telling my boss I'm looking if it weren't for all the time I am going to need off to interview.

Is telling him the right thing to do?

If you don't think they'll get rid of you first before you leave, it would be OK to tell them. They might hire soemone else before you find another job.

I know EXACTLY what you're going through. Just stop showing up for work. That's what i did. He doesn't need to know your business. If you have an interview and get the job, then go for it. But i wouldn't tell my boss that i'm looking for another job.

be carefull, if you tell your boss you may be leaving he/she may have the right to dismiss you depending on how long you worked for him/her. i would just call in sick on the day of your new job interview... this is advice coming from an employer.

Call in sick, use some vacation days, work overtime and compensate but don't, really don't be the fool telling him you're searching for a new job.

Dont tell your boss that u r thinking of leaving until u have secured the job that u r seeking. Once u have secured the job, u can drop the bomb on him.

Bosses typically don't share their personal business with employees, so why do vice versa? As long as you give them a reasonable notice, like 2 weeks before you plan to leave, theres nothing to feel guilty about.

I wasn't really planning on giving notice, Tom. lol

I have no vacation days and no sick days to use to interview, either.

Only if you're prepared to get fired.

Look at it this way: if you tell them, you might get fired. If you take extra sick/vacation time for interviews, you might get fired. I think you're more likely to buy time by using sick/vacation time, but if you don't really need to keep the job and you value honesty more than continued employment. . .tell them. smile

Hey Tack! hug

See, that's my downfall: The honesty thing. I've only been at the company two months so there is no sick time, no vacation to use. The guy basically lied to me regarding the position from the get-go but in order to treat people better than the shitty way they treat me, I wanted to be upfront and honest with the guy. He lied about what he was gonna pay me, about transferring my securities brokerage licenses over, shit, everything. I kinda feel like I don't owe him the truth.
