N.C. emergency medical team suspended after screw-up

RALEIGH, N.C. - A medical examiner studying a body in a morgue was startled when the man took a shallow breath.

Emergency medical technicians had declared 29-year-old Larry D. Green dead almost two hours earlier, after he was hit by a car.

Medical examiner J.B. Perdue was called to the accident scene Monday but did not examine Green then. Later, he was documenting Green’s injuries when he noticed the man was breathing.

“I had to look twice myself just to make sure it was there, that’s how subtle it was,” Perdue said.

Green, 29, was taken to Duke University Medical Center in Durham, where he was in critical condition Wednesday.

Several members of the Franklin County emergency medical service have been suspended pending an investigation, said Darnell Batton, the county attorney.

I would think just by touching him if he had been declared dead a couple of hours you would notice he was still alive, bodys kinda get cold fairly quickly especially in a morgue I can see that mans family in the lawyers office already

This reminds me of the origin of the Irish tradition of the "Wake"... so named because in centuries past when people would pass out from drinking too much other people couldn't tell whether they were dead or not. Somehow they discovered that people were being buried alive (I think while bodies were being exhumed for some reason they discovered scratch marks inside the coffins) and started the tradition of laying the body out for a few days to see if the person would Wake.
Also they would tie a string to a body's finger and bury the body with the string leading up through the ground to a bell.

And those medics should not be suspended. Maybe he was dead at the time, temporarily

Ya don't have to leave the body open for a few days..... The funeral home removes the blood from your body and pumps in some shit to preserve the body so it don't rot right away till sometime after the funeral.

Yeah... I was going to say that people used to be dumb but then I realized in a few centuries a lot of our ways are going to seem unbelievable....
