Prince stares into the half empty cocktail glass. His secret date excused herself a few momments ago to freshen up in the ladies room. THis was her 8th cocktail that night, and Prince was starting to have doubts about this woman--If Mani found out the payoff for the divorce would dwarf that with Mayte. What am I doing here, he wonders. Dreams, aspirations, the empty feeling of living with a groupie only to escape to some obsure resturaunt and mess around with yet another groupie, weighed heavily on his soul. Staring into the glass he sees the reflection of his date walking up to him. She massages his shoulders from behind and whispers in his ear. "Don't be afraid--this won't hurt, " Zelaira says.

*1940's New York* It was the last place in the world I ever thought I'd see her. Drinks had passed over an evening that blurred between bad small talk between a bartender bent on claiming he was the one that created the game of baseball after a drunken evening out with a girl who liked to swing. I looked down at what was supposed to be my final look into the glass-I had told myself that 3 hours ago, but I was still here, waiting for someone. Something. Thoughts played in my head-that kind of swirl of the mind when your vision is impaired and your pride is lifted. I was a lone wolf in a place I thought I knew. I had stumbled into this joint by accident, taking a new route home to the place I had seen too many times before-nothing fancy, not a hole in the wall, just something that did the trick after a long day's work. What I really needed-well that must've been obvious to anyone. I looked around the room wondering why these other folks happened to be here-what the story was. Were they as down on their luck as me? Maybe I just stopped caring long ago-I had just me, it's how I got by. My fingers touched the ice, making me a bit more alert as I took out the cherry, knowing this was another evening well spent. Drunk in a bar with strangers. Oh yes, Ma would be proud. I heard a voice say my name just as I placed the cherry stem down on the napkin. It was her.
