In Thailand nearly all the major cosmetic companies always include skin whitening in their products. Darker skinned Thais are often looked down on, for example usually playing maids, servants or criminals in television programmes, while light skinned Chinese Thais play lead roles. Maybe India is the same? That's what I am saying. I am sure there are a lot of beautiful dark skinned people. Thais are quite neurotic about it. ... [Edited 1/2/05 17:39pm]

Uh uh. She is Catherine Zeta-Jones, but the novelty is she's Indian. As usual they've singled out the Indian woman who most fits the stereotypical "white" standards of beauty.
Ebert has gone gaga for her which means her movies are guaranteed positive thumbs-up reviews until the attraction wanes (see also: Jennifer Lopez). [Edited 1/2/05 17:58pm]

I'd agree with you except that she's seen as ideally beautiful in her own country. Re: Jennifer Lopez/Ebert - it hasn't waned. He still gives her terrible films great reviews.

I wonder why America has fallen for just her? There are other beautiful bollywood stars. They all look very much alike

He tried so hard to make it seem like he was reviewing it objectively. Two and a half stars? - but he was deadly serious. Why didn't he just subtitle the review, "I LIKE HER TITS". And the reason she is seen as ideally beautiful there is the same reason she is seen as ideally beautiful here - she conforms to white standards of beauty. This is the same reason why many wealthy Asian women undergo surgery to have their eyelids "straightened".

It isn't America. She's barely known here. The poll I was referring to was done in the UK.

Poo on that poll.
My vote for the most beautiful woman in the world, visually speaking, goes to CNN International's Tumi Makgabo. What delivery...

In India the lighter you are the more beautiful you are considered. It's a cultural thing.

You can always change your personality. But if you are ugly, you are screwed. If the physical attraction is not there then the personality doesn't mean anything. I have never popped a boner over a woman's personality.
I have seen better looking women than this one.

You have dark-skinned people trying to lighten up with special products, and you have white people baking in the sun for hours trying to look dark. Humans are silly creatures. I, like almost all of society, am guilty of many of these myself.

IT's because many people are under the impression that the grass is always greener on the other side; that if they were the opposite of what they ARE, their life will suddenly be better somehow. I'm guilty of it too. I agree that I think most everybody is to some degree, no matter how self-confident or happy with themselves a person may be.
