I could never fathom picking one single woman out of all the gorgeous women with whom we're lucky enough to share the world as the most beautiful, but lately I've been hearing this woman's name mentioned as just that. 60 Minutes has something about her tonight, Roger Ebert's got a bone for her, and I think she just topped some poll in the UK as the most beautiful woman in the world. She's a big star of the Bollywood film scene, and I must say, she really is quite stunning. Anyone familiar with her?

She does not look like the regular Indian population. I notice the international stars of colour seem to try to look lighter, my observation.

I read an article about her in Rolling Stone about a year ago. I thought she seemed rather likable too....especially from her 60 min. interview. She seems like the type that appeals to both men and women. As long as women aren't catty and hold her beauty against her as a reason not to like her.

If it's anything like here in Thailand, women desire to have lighter skin. This is seen to be more beautiful and suggest a higher class status. In Thailand nearly all the major cosmetic companies always include skin whitening in their products. Darker skinned Thais are often looked down on, for example usually playing maids, servants or criminals in television programmes, while light skinned Chinese Thais play lead roles. Maybe India is the same?

I read something on the internet somewhere once about how it's always lighter skinned women in the foreground of Indian art..I think they were discussing a play which had a dance sequence and all the women behind the lighter skinned star were very dark... I'll try to find it
