Saw the ads on tv, not impressed. Looks like a low budget movie with some goofy geek.

I thought it was a low-key but genuinely funny movie...I laughed out loud more than a couple of times. A few of the 20-25somethings that work 4 me have watched this 3 or 4 times. They thought it was great...

What I liked about it is that everyone knows or has known someone like Napoleon...and the way guys like him have been portrayed in many movies in the past has been as victims or losers that can't do anything right, etc. This movie made him the hero...and showed that a kid like him (and a guy like his brother and kids like his friends) can have friends, do great things and be loved just for who they are.
Also, the movie had no swearing and no sex in it whatsoever...that's a rare thing these days.

When this movie came out in the theaters I wanted to see it very badly but unfortunately never did get to.

I got the DVD for Christmas and was very excited to watch it but, upon my first viewing, I have to admit for the first half hour or so I was thinking "Hm. This isn't what I was expecting." and I was worried I was going to be disappointed bigtime..but then I kind of got into the groove of the movie and now, after having watched it a couple more times, I think it is a really wonderful and very funny film.

It's definitely NOT a movie for everybody though, and you kind of have to have a certain sense of humor to appreciate it. The reviews of it on sites like RottenTomatoes and IMdB are sooooo polarized - you either love this movie, or (to put it mildly) you really DON'T love it. Seems like there's no middle ground.

I think it helps your appreciation of the movie also if you yourself were a misfit nerd growing up, or you hung around people like Napoleon and friends. For me, I wasn't so much laughing AT Napoleon and Pedro and Deb (I loved her character..) et. al., as I was laughing WITH them since I could relate to a lot of the mentality of their misfitedness, if that makes any sense.

I also loved the 80s feel and visuals this film employed. smile

Actually, this movie has a lot of heart and is very sweet biggrin if you are able to see it past the oddball quirkiness. Such as the ending scene with Napoleon and Deb and the tetherball game...I thought that scene was perfect, with "The Promise" playing as background music.

ps - the commentary really helps you understand a lot of the scenes better and where the film's writers got the ideas for a lot of the situations, like the scene where Napoleon calls home and asks Kip to get their grandma and bring him his chapstick - that scene was almost verbatim of a conversation the film's writer had years ago with his 6th grade kid brother which, to me, made the movie scene even funnier.

For some reason that line has totally cracked me up too from the first time I watched the movie! It was just so absurd and then him trying to feed that gross casserole to Tina (the llama) was, again, just SO ABSURD! I love it!

I want a tshirt with that line on it, actually. biggrin lol
