I wouldn't say it's common so much as it's not rare. Unfortunately even if you look after them properly your body still might decide it doesn't want hunks of metal shoved in it.

It's generally a good idea to remove them as soon as you get pregnant and leave them out if you plan to breastfeed, and just get them re-pierced again later on.

I had one done in 1995, but it stubbornly refused to heal, so I took it out in 1997. In 2002, I re-pierced that one and had the other one pierced in the same session. They've done just fine.

Like most people, I thought the second one hurt more. Part of it was probably because I saved the re-piercing for last, though... I expected that there would be additional pain when going through scar tissue.

A tip for anyone considering this piercing: it seems to be less painful if the piercer has you lying down rather than sitting upright. I think it's because lying down makes it easier for you to relax.

I'm thinking the 2nd one hurts more because you're bracing for it that time. The first time, I knew it would hurt, but I had no idea how much pain to expect.

I've also heard that the first piercing uses up some of the body's natural pain killers. But I'm not qualified to express an opinion on whether that's true.

I did, from 1995 to 1997. I also had just one ear pierced between 1994 and 2003. These days I prefer symmetry, though.
