I know we have orgers in some of these areas.
I think it would be good to know when people hear from them, such as Fauxie and his wife in Thailand.

Faux is based in Bangkok, which was entirely sheltered from the tsunami, so he should be okay.

Oh my God.

I saw this thread title earlier, and to my shame, I didn't think to look - because I really didn't realise it was THAT big a disaster.

I've just watched the news here, and they were showing amateur footage taken from a hotel balcony of the tidal wave hitting - it was like something out of Deep Imapact or The Day After Tomorrow. I'm sorry for the movie-comparisions, but I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing.

Unbelievable - those poor people.

Seeing the news coverage of this disaster is so incredibly sad. Knowing that people were swept away and entire communities pulverized is heartbreaking.

My prayers go out to all the families in southern Asia...someone mentioned that there are some orgers in THailand...has anyone heard anything?

I sorta freaked out when I first heard the news becuase I knew SassyB was en route to Hong Kong. THough later I learned it wasn't hit. He emailed me this morning that he's ok.

More and more horrible stories reach us now...many children lost their parents some of them were little kids on holiday with their parents.

This is so sad. I heard a report that said this earthquake was more powerful than all the earthquakes around the world in the last 5 years.....combined.

My thoughts are for the people on the Andamans. The news keeps focusing on Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and Indonesia, but those islands were so exposed and so close to the epicentre that the results have been absolutely devastating.

What's the latest for the Andaman Islands? They're probably more at risk from the earthquake itself than the tsunamis. Apparently the sea-bed has shifted vertically by fifteen metres along a 1000 kilometre stretch which would pass right by the Andamans. Take a look at the map on this page: http://earthquake.usgs.go...04/usslav/ The yellow dots show where the aftershocks occurred, including right through the Andamans. Very worrying..

The Indonesian authorities are talking abt 25.000 victims on Sumatra alone, so that would make a total of 50.000 mostly children

Before the Tsunami hit the shores, it created a kind of vacuum that pulled the tide out some 300 yards and they were saying that there were so many child deaths because children saw the shores littered with fish and went out to catch them and then the waves came crashing in. It will take weeks, possibly even months, to determine just how much the region was changed by the force of the earthquake. The final number of victims will never truly be known as so many will never be recovered.

This is a staggering catastrophy.

I know the death toll has gone up, but as of last night, when it was 22,000 half of them were from Sri Lanka. There are a lot of people from Sri Lanka in the St. George section of Staten Island, and they're all waiting to hear from their families.
