I know we have orgers in some of these areas.
I think it would be good to know when people hear from them, such as Fauxie and his wife in Thailand.

Anyone hear?

This is just unbelievable sad

Faux didn't notice much himself. Yes, that means he's alive.

Faux is based in Bangkok, which was entirely sheltered from the tsunami, so he should be okay.

Reincarnate

I don't know whether anyone has posted this on the other thread, but this organisation does great work in disaster areas.

If you feel moved by what's happened, and want to help, please click on one of the links below:

American Red Cross: http://www.redcross.org/d...onate.html

British Red Cross: http://www.redcross.org.uk/homepage.asp

Australian Red Cross: http://www.redcross.org.au/default.asp

This is what the Red Cross aims to help with. Any little bit of money each of us can donate will help another family in the region:

Paul Anticoni, British Red Cross head of international aid, says: ‘This is clearly a massive disaster, made all the more difficult because it has hit so many countries.’

‘The priority for the Red Cross is to get relief supplies into the region as quickly as possible and, if necessary, to send in teams of disaster response experts who can support the volunteers and staff already working in the affected countries.

‘In the longer term we will help people recover and rebuild their lives.’

Oh my God.

I saw this thread title earlier, and to my shame, I didn't think to look - because I really didn't realise it was THAT big a disaster. boxed

I've just watched the news here, and they were showing amateur footage taken from a hotel balcony of the tidal wave hitting - it was like something out of Deep Imapact or The Day After Tomorrow. I'm sorry for the movie-comparisions, but I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing.

Unbelievable - those poor people.

Seeing the news coverage of this disaster is so incredibly sad. Knowing that people were swept away and entire communities pulverized is heartbreaking.
I'm firmly planted in denial

Yeah. . .I mean, you have to remember, the Richter scale is logarithmic! 9.0 is just INSANE. I can't begin to imagine what that felt like for people close to it.

Hi Ben, and thanks for the e-mail. We've been safely tucked up in Bkk for the last week or two.

I just took a look at the other thread. Some people eh? confused

My thoughts are for the people on the Andamans. The news keeps focusing on Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and Indonesia, but those islands were so exposed and so close to the epicentre that the results have been absolutely devastating.

I'm glad to hear you're safe in Bangkok Nick.

What's the latest for the Andaman Islands? They're probably more at risk from the earthquake itself than the tsunamis. Apparently the sea-bed has shifted vertically by fifteen metres along a 1000 kilometre stretch which would pass right by the Andamans. Take a look at the map on this page: http://earthquake.usgs.go...04/usslav/ The yellow dots show where the aftershocks occurred, including right through the Andamans. Very worrying..

We're not talking about loss of life in such great numbers, but rather the loss of cultures. There seems to be little focus on the Andamans.

The Indonesian authorities are talking abt 25.000 victims on Sumatra alone, so that would make a total of 50.000 eek mostly children cry

Hi Faux, glad to see that you're ok hug

sad

Before the Tsunami hit the shores, it created a kind of vacuum that pulled the tide out some 300 yards and they were saying that there were so many child deaths because children saw the shores littered with fish and went out to catch them and then the waves came crashing in. This is unbelievably sad cry

It will take weeks, possibly even months, to determine just how much the region was changed by the force of the earthquake. The final number of victims will never truly be known as so many will never be recovered.

This is a staggering catastrophy.

Kohl

I know the death toll has gone up, but as of last night, when it was 22,000 half of them were from Sri Lanka. There are a lot of people from Sri Lanka in the St. George section of Staten Island, and they're all waiting to hear from their families. sad
