why my new avatar was a magazine cover

1. because THE BELIEVER is an awesome magazine and everyone should check it out. nod

2. because for xmas, my sweetie got me a year's subscription to it, and i got my first issue today, and i wanted to be a big show-off. woot!

3. because the current issue comes with a DVD of neeto short films, and for a measly eight bucks, you get a cool DVD and a magazine full of really interesting writing and funky photography and illustrations, not to mention it's gotta be one of the best designed magazines out there right now. thumbs up!

4. cuz, mark my words, i'm gonna get published in that damn rag one day. nod

so there!

anyone else ever checked this magazine out? it's kinda hard to find, but definitely worth the hunt. nod

i've had friends refer to it as "the 'new yorker' for generation x" - it's kind of a hip, writerly, funky, quirky magazine just full of STUFF. kinda like that 70s kids' mag 'dynamite', only for grownups. lol nick hornby has a monthly book review column in it, they do lots of cool (and very long) interviews with people like ?uestlove, david byrne and amy sedaris, and they have monthly columns where they profile different weird inventions, different kinds of animals, different kinds of light fixtures (told you it was weird) and also they profile a kid in each issue...just because. lol i look forward to the new issue every month. nod

yeah, sorta - it's definitely for book lovers, but it has so much more in every issue. politics, music, film, whatevs - they have a literary journal that they publish too, called mcsweeney's quarterly. it's really fun, too:

it's hard to describe. i went to their retail store in brooklyn and they had it set up as a superhero supply warehouse, where you could buy capes and costumes and "alter ego disguises" and utility belts and all kinds of funky superhero gadgets. and when you bought stuff, you had to make up a superhero name for the cashier before you could buy anything. lol

I've just had a look at their Web site and this magazine seems to deal with books, which is something I generally frown upon. I did, however, learn that Morrissey has e-mail! biggrin

you see, The Believer is something you'd buy at the bookstore along with your copies of Oui and Hustler, so the cashier won't think you're a TOTAL chronic masturbating perv. thumbs up!
