Unless people are personally involved they won't be thinking about all of this when they're banging or having they brains banged out tonight. Oh let's donate $20 so we won't feel guilty at the dinner table tonight.

Fakers...

So, if people show compassion they are "fakers"? What a load of crap! Just because you're an insensitive @$$hole, doesn't mean everyone else is.

Showing compassion because that's "expected" isn't real compassion.

You're making one hell of an assumption that everyone who is upset by this is showing "expected" compassion. Who are you to judge people's motives?

Seems like most people don't dare to say the truth. How dare I? I dunno, it's just me I guess.

Don't pretend to know the truth. The truth lies in our motives which are deeply personal and not for you to judge.

No, this is merely your opinion, and a sad one at that.

No, that's not the case. It is simply offensive to call us fakers when you have no clue as to our personal motives for being sympathetic at that time. You don't know them and you can't know them, so do not attempt to rubbish them.

Ah and I should care that I "offended" you, because...? If you are sympathetic for reasons other than being personally involved it's probably because you can relate to it, which has to do with some drama you've been through yourself. So this event is simply reminding you of your own pain which has very little to do with caring about those who got hit by the tsunami.

Augh!

I don't know about anyone else but I feel compassion and it's not fake. At the moment I'm facing trying to find a new place to live in a short space of time and I don't know how I'm going to do it, totally stressed out and I'm relating that to the idea of living someplace where not only my house is gone but the streets are flooded and there are dead bodies and having trouble getting drinking water and worrying about disease, etc. etc. I can hardly begin to imagine and I feel so fortunate to live in America where even when life sucks there is always opportunity and relative safety.

Jowee.... I love you but just because you feel something doesn't mean everyone else does too, and even when something is true doesn't always mean you should say it. hug

This is a time for love...everyone!

Yes, if you were right that I am insincere then that is good reason for me to defensive. BUT, not the only reason for somebody to be defensive. Having my (or our) integrity questioned is offensive. Can't you see that, or are you wholly consumed with cynacism?

Very interesting. Let's not question our own or anyone else's integrity, because that might lead to some disturbing conclusions!

I'm sure I'm going to be ignored but while I think you have a good point Jowee, now isn't the time and this thread isn't the place. Wait a few weeks and start a thread on the subject of compassion (hopefully with a better tone)...?
The fact is that many of us do feel genuinely about this tragedy and bringing this up now is just...not appropriate.

No, let's not assume to know somebody's motives. It's not very difficult.

Yeah, well said. I'm sorry for feeding the troll and spoiling this thread somewhat.

The latest news is looking really grim. Apparently there are no firm reports of the fate of a million people in Aceh, at the centre of the earth quake. It's sad, and tragic, and don't nobody doubt my sympathy on the matter.
