Theres also the prefetch trick and a few about:config tweaks that will make it run and launch much faster. I was hesitant to switch over to Firefox for a long time because it lags so much when you launch it, and it was driving me nuts. But since those tweaks it runs much better. Look around on Google for how to make firefox run faster.

They loaded slow, were missing alot of features, and I couldn't install some of the useful addons & plugins that were available for Internet Explorer.

Also, it used to be very difficult, if not damn near impossible, to get Windows to use something other than Internet Explorer as your default browser. So if you were running a program, for example, and it needed to launch a web page, it would automatically load in IE, regardless if you regularly used Netscape or Mozilla instead.

Eventually, Microsoft added the option to choose your default browser (though theres still no way to completely uninstall Internet Explorer), and Mozilla completed version 1.0 of Firefox, with a bunch of themes and addons ready to go for its launch. This final version of Firefox is more polished than previous versions, and works pretty good. And with all the addons available, theres alot of cool things you can do with it that you cant do with IE.

To add to what Tom said... ever since Microsoft defeated Netscape in the "browser wars," Microsoft hasn't really done much to improve their browser. I believe the founder of Netscape said something (pre-Firefox 1.0) to the effect of, "There have been no significant web browser advancements since 1998." Well, Firefox is a step beyond the current version of Internet Explorer, and if nothing else, it should force Microsoft to put more effort into improving IE.

Among other things, one nice feature of Firefox is "tabbed browsing." This allows you to open multiple web pages in one browser window. I know it doesn't sound like much, but once you've gotten used to tabbed browsing, you'll really miss it when you're forced to use IE.

I remember the days when Netscape was the undisputed king of the browsers... Windows 95 shipped with IE 1.0, but it was a pretty lame browser, and I used it for only one thing: downloading Netscape.
