Hockey

In a few hours I will take my familly to a hockey game in Portland.
It is some school thing with my eight year old, so I am missing the work christmass party for it.
I can't think of anything I'd like to do less.
Can anyone here explain what noone else has ever been able to.
In any team sport, I don't know the guys, I don't have anything riding on it, why should I care if they win or loose.
I have never been able to watch an entire game of any sport.
Why do people care, it actually baffles me, this is not just a stance I take.

I used to watch a little car racing, but all the passion of the machines seems to have been engineered out, and all thats left is rooting for a driver I don't know.

I'd apreciate anyones opinions here.
Now I'm older than movies, Now I'm wiser than dreams, And I know who's there

lol ---- not sure if Portland is AHL or ... what hockey league ...

first off -- i am NOT a huge sports fan either ... i like certain teams ... and i follow them ... but not religiously ... and the local hockey team for me ... I HAVE NOT been to a game all year --- YET ... altho i will i am sure soon ... I do follow them daily usually in the paper ...

i used to NOT LIKE hockey (i hate to use the term HATE ) ... i used to think of hockey as a "fight" ... you know the old joke ... i went to a fight and a hockey game broke out ... wink

then--- a couple of yrs ago ... i kinda got into it ... by a series of events ... sold a home to a hockey player ... some co workers had season tickets and i went a couple of times when they did not ... etc ... cool

then--- i started to really enjoy it ... the local team here ... is amateur ... so you get to see some of the players ... BEFORE they are multi millionaires, etc ... and i truly came to appreciate the GAME ... and the TEAM aspect of it ... i actually now believe that the sport of hockey is the BEST team sport out there ... these days ....

i say TEAM ... because ... most successful hockey teams ... have players ... with roles , etc ... maybe 1 or 2 are scorers ... mainly fast skaters that can score ... then 1 or 2 are defensive players ... with great shots ... so they can score on a penalty play , etc ... its realy an interesting game ....

and of course ... then each team has a fighter (or 2) that are mainly ... in my opinion ... for fun ... and to help protect the scorers (who can get picked on sometimes too roughly ... ) .....

its a brutal sport ... really ... and these guys take their lumps ...

do not get me wrong ... i do think sometimes the fighting gets outta hand ... and the illegal hits , etc ... i do think they have to frown against some of the negative things about hockey ... but hey ... all sports have negatives ... i used to be a huge baseball nut ... and then i went thru my football faze too ... wink

u mentioned ... not knowing the guys .... and ... an eight yr old .... point out little things to him ... maybe buy a program ... and you can tell who the main scorers are ... and who they have played for ... you can also tell who the goons are (by the amount of penalty minutes ) .... (PIM= penalty minutes) ... i dont understand every rule in hockey ... but you can usually tell if the one team gets a penalty and the other team goes on the power play pretty easily ! ... now you are gettin me interested in goin to a hockey game tonight ... lol

sports do promote alot of good things ... including commaraderie ... (sp?lol) and team effort ... etc ....

i have alot of regrets of sports that i DID NOT play in high school ... even tho i did do some things ....

at 8 yrs old ... its great to get them out there ... and try to see where their interests lie ... even if he/she is only interested in watching .... and eating a good hot dog ....

eek cool

I guess I see the points people are making, but none of it answers my question of why should I or anyone care about who wins theese boring things?
So I pick out high scorers and they score, I'm bored to death.

Yes I know how much it means to my son, and I don't moan about it in front of him.

I don't see any real comraderie, and even if it did make the players feel better, great but why would I want to watch them.

I know this all sounds like an asshole setup, but I would love to get to the bottom of why people watch theese things.
