Yup. he DOES look weird. not only that, it's going to be very tough trying to beat Gene Wilder. I'd say - impossible.
So if that was a new movie, story, maybe it would've been great, but since it's a remake...hmmm...you won't be able not to compare to the original, and that would make this new version probably suck. But, let's wait and see.

It certainlyt seems to have the Burton/Depp stamp of madness, should be pretty good. Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

He looks somewhat anaemic..and is it just me, or has he got false teeth in? why's he got his hair like that? He looks like a vampire.
I like Augustus Gloop. | |

I agree that these two would probably do a great job, but it's still trying to redo a masterpiece. Something that most of us grew on, and remember fondly. Trying to mess with our memories is going to be tough. I truly hope they'll do a good job, and I think Tim Burton IS fantastic, but I think he's trying to do the impossible here.

That's what I was thinking three. But Tim Burton is the only man who could do it, if anyone can. Fear is the mind-killer.

Yes. maybe it is supposed to be for the new generation, that for them the original version might not look as glamorous as it to us.

he looks like a cross between michael jackson and madonna! what's going on with those teeth? the art direction looks great, but depp as willie wonka looks like he was cast in a high school christmas play or something.
this movie shouldn't have been remade, but of course i'll see it because it's tim burton.

So if that was a new movie, story, maybe it would've been great, but since it's a remake...hmmm...you won't be able not to compare to the original, and that would make this new version probably suck. But, let's wait and see. Technically, its not a remake. Burton's screenplay and designs come from the original novel by Roald Dahl, not the film with Gene Wilder. Both were based on the same book, but this version is suppossed to be more in line with the author's vision. Apparently, Dahl's family has never been too happy with the way the Wilder version toned down the darker aspects of the book. Who better than Burton to do a dark children's story?? I love the original too, but I'm not going to view this as the same animal. While the Wilder version may be near-and-dear to our hearts, I have to acknowledge that certain liberties were taken with the material, and I don't mind the idea of seeing a different take on it. Besides, I'm not so sure that the original is as perfect as we think it is. I know when I've shown it to my kids, they really don't seem interested. Its certainly dated. I just hope that song from the trailer doesn't play throughout the movie. That has to be the most annoying song ever written by Danny Elfman (whom I normally love). Waaaaay more obnoxious than the Oompa-Loompa song that has plauged parents for years. ----- [Edited 12/10/04 6:53am] Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. I don't think he's doing it to "mess with our memories". I think he's doing it to present a more accurate adaptation. Overall, its more for those who are children today. I absolutley love Edward Scissorhands, However, I thought Tim Burton's remake of The Planet of the Apes wasn't very good. How can a movie with Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter go so wrong. i know i'll be in the minority with this, but i wasn't too thrilled with "big fish", either. it wasn't horrible - it just didn't hold my attention. loved "sleepy hollow", though.

Well, at least you like Sleepy Hollow. Burton's best film, to date, is Ed Wood. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

this movie shouldn't have been remade, but of course i'll see it because it's tim burton. You know what? I was thinking that maybe JD based the character of Mr. Wonka on Michael Jackson. There's certain little moves and facial expressions that reminded me of MJ. And as JD actually does character studies for the roles he plays then it's quite possible.

Looks fun, fun, fun. We'll see once it hits theatres, but nothing can replace the original for me. Of course, I'll go into it with an open mind, but I also know that that kind of movie magic is hard to come across more than once.

And, by God, that song is annoying. It reminds me of an equally annoying movie song - that countdown on the days left till Halloween in Halloween III. Try and get that one outta your head!

I'm excited. I think it looks like a lot of fun, and like Carrie and some others, I'm of the mind that a Burton/Depp combo will definitely pay off. And like Jedi said, it's more an adaptation of the source material than a remake of the movie.
I actually like remakes -- movies and songs. I like to see/hear how people approach the same material. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

After seeing the trailer on tv yesterday I have very mixed feelings about this adaptation. For me, I think I will have to see the entire movie, probably more than once to decide how I feel about it in the end. I'm firmly planted in denial

The sets look awesome.
I didn't especially care for the "Chewing gum is gross I hate it the most" line from JD. Sounded lame. I'll go into this movie with an open mind but I am a bit worried.
