It's a symbol, cutting the ring would not have ruined his marriage (unless his wife is equally dumb of course). Question is what he's gonna do now he has 9 fingers. It will limit his career options in the future. How's that for responsibility regarding his wife and children they might have now or in the future? Then again, I'm not that naive to think that people who join the armed forces actually think about what's best for their family. PS: his wife is not upset with him anymore, so why would you say she's an ungrateful bitch? because i think to even go on television and SAY that he was in the wrong for doing it shows that shes kinda selfish... my response woulda been much different. but, then again, im PMSy right now, so dont trust my emotional state for the next few days  One of the best days of my life... http://prince.org/msg/100/291111

Only 1 is married, I'll have to ask him if he saw this story 
I have to agree with most if not all of what naked said, until any of you has been over there in that man's position, you are in no postion to judge. The importance should be in the sentiment behind the object, not the object itself.
