You know, the soldier is not the only stupid one in this story.
What kind of doctor ould even consider such a decision as a rational one?
What made the doctor even ask such a question whether to cut the ring or the finger?
disbelief

But maybe cutting his finger was the right thing to do. This will teach him a valuable lesson in life - stupidity doesn't pay!

This thread has got some of the best quotes I've seen in a long time ... so credit where credit's due ... thank you to all of the following for making me chuckle this morning:

There's no substitute for telling it like it is:

But, the thing I still can't get out of my mind is that they LOST the ring. I know it's not supposed to be a funny story but ... (there does seem to be an element of the Keystone Cops about his medical team)

It wasnt' "sweet" to "prove" your love by hacking off a body part for the sake of sparing a probably fairly inexpensive gold band (most wedding bands aren't that expensive unless it's encrusted w/diamonds or something, which in this case, I'd hightly doubt).

It was ridiculous and I question the IQ of both parties involved - the doctor and the husband.

All I can say is that if my spouse had to choose between either losing a wedding band or their OWN FINGER, I'd be very upset at them choosing a scrap of metal over their own body part. I care about THEM, not some material thing that can easily be replaced.

What this guy did just shows he's not too bright.

You know, I don't get it either. I mean it's obvious that the ring was still on the finger when they cut it, so what happened to the finger?

my GOD you guys are some heartless people !! can you EVEN imagine being away from all of your loved ones like these men are ???? they are taken from their families and friends and put into situations that NONE of us sitting in our homes behind our lovely computers can even imagine. the ring is a symbol between him and his wife.... a wife he had to leave behind to RISK HIS LIFE, and perhaps, PERHAPS, he loves her just that much, that the mere thought of having that symbol ripped away from him, the only part of his wife he carries with him everyday, was too much to deal with. try thinking about it a different way, and maybe you will understand the choice he made, i myself think it shows just how deep and powerful love can be. personally, i think his wife sounds like an ungrateful bitch... i still think the story is touching, and i pray they find and return the ring that meant so much to him.

They are not taken, they made the choice to go. This story just shows how dumb people can be. There's nothing noble or romatic about losing your entire fucking finger just because you don't want them to cut your ring and save your finger.

I by no means remember all this word for word but...

isn't there stuff in some wedding sermons about the symbolism of the ring beina a continual unbroken circle blah, blah, blah...

now if a person were to take that to heart then yeah, they wouldn't want their ring cut off right?

2 of my brothers are in the army, both have served in Iraq, one has been there twice, the other may be going back. Only 1 is married, I'll have to ask him if he saw this story smile

I have to agree with most if not all of what naked said, until any of you has been over there in that man's position, you are in no postion to judge.

I get a lil defensive when in comes to military shrug it comes with my proud big sister badge giggle

THANK YOU hug and, yes, thats what the symbolism of the ring means, no beginning, and no end... at least thats what was said at my wedding nod so, i would think that to CUT the ring off - would be breaking that promise. i still think the story is a sweet one heart

Symbolism is the key word here. It's a symbol, cutting the ring would not have ruined his marriage (unless his wife is equally dumb of course). Question is what he's gonna do now he has 9 fingers. It will limit his career options in the future. How's that for responsibility regarding his wife and children they might have now or in the future? Then again, I'm not that naive to think that people who join the armed forces actually think about what's best for their family.

PS: his wife is not upset with him anymore, so why would you say she's an ungrateful bitch?
