I'm honorary since I pass on both counts! A taxi driver asked if I was half Thai the other week, after I gave him some directions that took back street shortcuts in Bangkok... maybe he was just saying 'you half Thai or what? STFU!'
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

I once sent you an orgnote to ask if you were from the Torres Strait Islands - one of them is called "Sabai" and I wondered if you were from there nod

...just a bit of useless trivia lol

lol

My Thai hasn't improved for about 6 months now. My father in law is always driving us around these days so no conversations with taxi drivers. Plus I'm not working so I mix with less Thais outside the family now. I've been lazy. nod

I can still surprise people, although you know they have very low expectations when it comes to foreigners speaking Thai lol

Hi there wave

Not working and getting driven around by your father in law... You must be doing something right!

My Thai is in this long transition, since I passed the stage where people would say 'put Thai geng!', and entered the stage where I now hear 'put Thai mai geng!', which I guess means I think I can speak Thai but the sound that comes out of my mouth is unintelligble. Speaking Thai is like my pool game, peaking at two beers then going rapidly downhill.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

lol

I like the pool analogy. I've actually stopped playing pool in Thailand because I never play pool anymore and feel therefore that I'll play badly if I try. confuse I'm sure that's the wrong way to approach it.

You must have reached a plateau. Expectations are raised once u can converse and all of a sudden your tones have to be spot on too. big grin Thais and their tones mad

Yeah, tones are my downfall. I've reached a plateau of vocabulary because my wife only uses a small vocab when talking to me (samong lek, hoop baak, words like that), and I don't get around to opening up any of my Thai books.

I played pool at a bar in Sukumvit last week (I was in Thailand for work then holiday), and the member of staff who broke pocketed all the balls before I got a single shot in. That's no fun.

What's the plan for work?

No plans for 'work' - just to keep on keeping on doing whatever it is that I do - don't ask! (except in orgnote)

'Samong lek' smile Can't say Mon's ever used that one, although 'hoop baak' she has. I more often that not hear 'guan son teen', 'lum kaan', or 'nii sai mai dii'! big grin

What about the classic 'maaaaaeng shipaeng'? lol

Once, when I was moving from my first job to my second, a mover carting my possessions to a truck looked at me -- I was clean-shaven and wearing a baseball cap -- and he said:

"You look like you could be Tiger Woods' older brudda..."

So, um, yeah ... put me down.

Huh?
U've contributed to a thread that really had no potential.
In a way, you're helping to save it beyond the point at which it even deserves.
