Yup. he DOES look weird. not only that, it's going to be very tough trying to beat Gene Wilder. I'd say - impossible.
So if that was a new movie, story, maybe it would've been great, but since it's a remake...hmmm...you won't be able not to compare to the original, and that would make this new version probably suck.

But, let's wait and see.

I'll be comparing it to the book because I never liked the original. It'll be interesting to see what we get out of the movie with our varying approaches...

I agree that these two would probably do a great job, but it's still trying to redo a masterpiece. Something that most of us grew on, and remember fondly. Trying to mess with our memories is going to be tough. I truly hope they'll do a good job, and I think Tim Burton IS fantastic, but I think he's trying to do the impossible here.

I don't think he's doing it to "mess with our memories". I think he's doing it to present a more accurate adaptation. Overall, its more for those who are children today.

Or for Tim Burton/Johnny Depp fans.

Or for Roald Dahl fans.

Or for people who think the original was a waste of celluloid

The sets look awesome.

I didn't especially care for the "Chewing gum is gross I hate it the most" line from JD. Sounded lame.

I'll go into this movie with an open mind but I am a bit worried. confused

Doesn't Willy Wonka say that in the book? confuse

It was more the WAY JD said it, or something. Kinda along the lines of listening to Keanu Reeves attempt to recite Shakespeare. Just sounds WRONG and weird.

Technically, its not a remake. Burton's screenplay and designs come from the original novel by Roald Dahl, not the film with Gene Wilder. Both were based on the same book, but this version is suppossed to be more in line with the author's vision. Apparently, Dahl's family has never been too happy with the way the Wilder version toned down the darker aspects of the book. Who better than Burton to do a dark children's story??

I love the original too, but I'm not going to view this as the same animal. While the Wilder version may be near-and-dear to our hearts, I have to acknowledge that certain liberties were taken with the material, and I don't mind the idea of seeing a different take on it. Besides, I'm not so sure that the original is as perfect as we think it is. I know when I've shown it to my kids, they really don't seem interested. Its certainly dated.

I just hope that song from the trailer doesn't play throughout the movie. That has to be the most annoying song ever written by Danny Elfman (whom I normally love). Waaaaay more obnoxious than the Oompa-Loompa song that has plagued parents for years.

True. On all aspects. Glad I read the entire thread before answering, as I would have said aproximately the same. Including the remark about the song.

BTW, Harry Connick Jr. does an amazing version of the Oompa Loompa song on his musical album Songs I Heard.

CarrieMPLS said, quite logically that;
with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp I can't help but think it's gonna be fabulous.

It will be. And guess who plays Charlie? The adorable Freddie Highmore that stole my heart in Finding Neverland. Depp was so impressed with the boy's acting skills he brought him over to the Willie Wonka movie!

So basically, from what I'm learning from all the teasers and posters of new movies that will come out only next summer, that we're going to be sitting here waiting for this movie to come out it a few months, when we'll long forget this thread ever existed. right?

Don't get me wrong, IMO Depp is a talented actor, but I do believe this may be his downfall. Depp is not Wilder, nor are they categorized in the same boat. I viewed the trailer and boy am I not diggin' it. I never liked the original and chances are that I will never see this one.

What's with the sunglasses anyhow? The music was a turnoff too. I am also not 8yrs old.

Unlike Wilder, Depp can act. wink

I'm so looking forward to this movie. While I hated the old movie, I loved the book and this new one's supposed to based on the book instead of being a remake of the old movie.

I disagree... Normally I might agree, but with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp I can't help but think it's gonna be fabulous.

Ditto!!! I don't think Tim Burton would do a remake of this if he didn't think he could pull it off!

LoL

Like people said leaving 21 Jump St would come to no good, like people said playing an ugly guy with scicorhands would be madness, like people thought him kookoo for playing an efeminate pirate based on Keith Richards, like people said playing a director with a love for anchora sweaters certainly never would earn him an Oscar, etcetcetc.

I looooove Depp for going the NON Hollywood route, being irritated about a cooing Oprah concerning his sexiest man alive status and for living in Europe, far away from people who want him to be things he's not.

I am sure this new version will not feature elaborate musical songs, like that pooha Hollywood version with WIlder. Dunno why everybody is so crazy about that one. It dragged and Wonka was not sufficiently scary.

PS. I am sure this movie is directed at 8 yr old's so you can skip the movie if you want to....

Tyler Perry was a homeless man in Atlanta when he began writing Madea plays. He was seeing by a couple of famous folks and boom he became a star. The opening scene of one play shows a grandmother shooting at her neighbor with her gun that she had hidden in her bra. It is crazy as hell and funny! It came through LA at the Wiltern a couple of times. He was suppose to get a show on Fox but they said Madea was too Ghetto. He stopped touring to pitch is deal the last play he just wrote was for Kelly Price. I didn't get a chance to see it though. Check out his website Byron. You may like it. It is not too churchy and way funny!
