OMG! I WANT ONE OF THESE! When I first browsed upon this, I thought it was a spoof website - but no, it's real and I'm bloody amazed...
It's a vinyl record player which reads the grooves in a record using lasers instead of a stylus. The only problem is that it costs £10,000 to buy one. http://www.elpj.com/ It actually ignores most surface scratches. There's never any wear either because there's no contact with a needle. How bloody amazing? I'm speechless.

I remember reading about these years ago. I think the manufacturers quietly let it die because of the advent of CDs
I want one too though! if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Can you still here the little scratches or dust that is on the vinyl?
If not, I'll pass. that's one of the things I like about vinyl. [Edited 12/5/04 11:28am]

back in 95, Radio Shack was still selling turntables. I picked one up there, just a regular model, but I vaguely remember a laser turntable being there as well (I could be wrong on this, I'm not 100% sure). It wasn't as bulky as the one in the pic, and nowhere near as expensive. I think it was under $500 actually.
