Look in the bottom left hand corner of the Gmail main screen. It was there in big red letters

You mean if you already have an account? They magically appear in the bottom left hand area of the inbox screen.

You mean if you don't already have an account? Orgnote myself or one of the other generous orgers on this thread. wink

Gonna be offline for a bit here, but I'll respond to orgnotes/send invites later.

I finally have a Gmail account (thanks Darin hug)

I send my first message to a fellow architect and he says:
"Finally you're coming out of the closet"

I say "What?"

"Didn't you know? Gmail stands for Gay Male" nod

I'm like eek

It's not true, is it?

Here's how I see it:

1) 1 gigabyte of disk space, free. (By comparison, when I purchased the first computer of my own back in 1996, its entire hard drive was only 1.6 GB.) Google's aim is that you'll never have to delete an email (unless you want to). Instead, you just "Archive" it, and it'll be available if you need to refer to it in the future.

2) Google has some new ideas about organizing email. First, you probably won't even need to organize it, as you can use Google's search technology to find the email(s) you seek. Second, if you want to organize your email, you "label" them instead of putting them in "folders." And you can put multiple labels on a single email. For example, if I send you an email about the .org, you might attach the labels "Matt" and "prince.org" to that email.

3) Since Gmail is still in beta and not yet open to the general public, you've got a better shot at getting the username you want, instead of some AOL-esque username like "mwc031878."

4) If you're into snob appeal (or "geek cred"), Gmail gives you something that "everyday people" can't have. But actually, as this thread demonstrates, Gmail invites aren't that hard to come by if you really want one. When Gmail was launched back in the spring, invites were going for $100+ on eBay. But at some point around June, Google seriously increased the availability of invites. Most users quickly get six invites of their own to distribute, with additional invites given to them periodically. Today, a Gmail invite sells for around $3 on eBay.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.
