Address Book

I've got 896 email addresses in my PC's address book. I'm not sure whom 75% of them are. Is this normal?

eek

Do people with multiple accounts e-mail their other identities?

This is my only account.

I'm sure your friends will be happy that you posted their email addresses so someone can harvest them.

I just think it's not normal that you post the addresses of people who might like their e-mail adres to be kept private and personal...

lol I didn't see mine so I don't care.

Justin, do you use Outlook? If so, there's a function on it that extracts the addresses from all received emails and adds them to you address book. I think the function may also extract any addresses from within the email txt itself, depending on how it's configured. Either way it's annoying, and it might be the reason you've gained so many addresses....but you CAN turn it off.

Not normal??? I'm sorry but if people don't want their email addresses given out, they shouldn't email people.

But in the face of widespread condemnation, I'll edit my original post.

Ah! That'll be it. I'll go looking for the option to turn it off.

Anyway - I couldn't be anomynous if I tried. There's only one person in the whole-wide world with my name - and that's me.

I'm Googleable.

I posted them in the hope that some of the addresses may have referred to people here and expected my online friends to identify if any belonged to them.

It seemed an easier option than to email all those addresses en masse, asking "Who the fuck is this"?

The thought that somebody might "harvest" the addresses never crossed my mind. I'm obviously not as suspicious, fucked-up and cynical as you are.

Has nothing whatsoever to do with being fucked-up or cynical...and has everything to do with respecting people's privacy...that alone should have had you telling yourself that posting people's email addresses wasn't a good idea.

What on earth are you on about?

It's not like that list was...

Joe Smith of 69 Fuckhead Street, England (Yes, THAT Joe Smith with ginger hair and glasses) - joesmith69@hotmail.com

It was more like...

Hung Like A Horse - hunglikeahorse@aol.com

Is everybody going to have a go at me now for posting two addresses which I've just made up but are probably real?

Why is everybody intent on pissing me off recently? What the fuck is everybody's problem?

No, I told you rather nicely that I was not really happy with the fact you posted my personal e-mail on a public forum.

You don't need to make a drama out of it, but what did you expect? People really happy that you publicise something they gave you in trust?
