NYC rent

I'm vaguely interested in maybe living in New York someday... what's the lowest rent I can expect for a studio apartment in a relatively safe part of Manhattan? Is any part of Manhattan not safe? What about Brooklyn? I've never even been to the city.

well, i lived in NYC for six amazing years, but one of the big deciding factors for my moving to chicago is that the rent was actually reasonable. i can live in my own apartment out here; that option would be unheard of for me in NYC on what i earned (and i made good money...AND i worked two jobs).

was it worth it? yeah. am i glad i'm not paying insane rent anymore? yeah.

Brooklyn is really shaping up nicely and the rents aren't as expensive. My friend just moved out there, but she says the city taxes suck. It's the price you pay for living in an amazing city. I say do it, even if it's just for a year.

Good luck!

Heavenly

I don't really know. I'm gonna be living at my Boss's house, in upstate NY, about an hour from Manhatten. So I won't have to pay rent. dancing jig

But eventually, I'd like my own appartement, so I'm hoping for no so crazy price rents in the future.

It ain't getting any cheaper here in Manhattan. Even the rents in Harlem are going up. The area's practically gentrified. The only cheap place left now is maybe Washington Heights and Inwood.

It's probably better to live outside Manhattan and work inside it.

Okay if somebody could do me a favor... please look at this site real quick http://www.liveinnyc.com/#1 and tell me what might be wrong with the feature property. Maybe it's just me but that seems like really good rent.

I live in a relatively safe neighborhood in brooklyn and i pay 500/mo. I don;t have a roommate or anything but I found my place through a friend which is why my rent is so cheap. If you're looking for cheap studios in manhttan i would say look into washington height/inwood. it's a nice area, right near the cloisters and inwood park and rent is still pretty cheap.

that's what i would do if i abosoultely had to live in manhattan. as it is, it's quicker for me to get to midtown manhattan from where i am in brooklyn than it is for me to get there from dyckman.

I shared a SMALL - emphasis on that word - studio apartment in the East Village and rent then was $800. I didn't know much about NY rents at all when I moved there and my roommate wanted to live in the EV so that's where we ended up, though even back then there were some pretty decent places in Brooklyn that I think would've been a better situation for us.

But living in New York was an awesome experience. If the NY rents are doable for a person for I wouldn't ever try to dissuade them from living there. I think everybody should have the experience of living in New York for a year or two out of their life. nod

Good luck. biggrin

I know. Same where I come from too. You could get a really great apartment in other places for the same cost as that tiny studio. It was quite a shock to the system when I moved to New York and discovered just how outrageous rents were, especially in certain areas like the Village.

And that place was SMALL, man and had a wooden floor that was crooked and literally sloped towards the other end of the room. If you set a glass of water down on the floor (we had no furniture) it would slowly slide away from you and/or if you filled the glass up too much, the liquid would slop over the edge of the glass.

Still, the place had a certain charm. wink smile (and it was in NYC!)
