Why does every sitcom (especially the ones on UPN) have to have an asexual/gay/corny next door neighbor/friend of the family who drops by anytime he wants, goes into the refrigerator at all times of night, never shows any interest in f***ing the hot daughter, and eventually moves in/becomes a series regular in by the third season?

Because it works. Remember Urkel? It was the blessing and curse for...what was that show called...the Urkel show? "Family....Something". Originally, that show was all about the mom, who was a regular character on "Perfect Strangers" and she become one of the least popular characters...hell, her loser sister got more attention than her. The only postive memory I have of that show was I thought the song "What A Wonderful World" was so beautiful that I almost cried once. I'm so pitiful. Then Urkel become a regular and I think they changed the theme song to something more upbeat (I think it was something like "As Days Go By" or something like that).

Actually, i think the least popular character was that little sister. LOL

I was so mortified one time when I was watching that show and the son was wearing the same shirt that I had. I never wore that shirt again...

THe "Family Matters" girl? I've heard she went through some changes. Did she become a porn star or booty video girl or something? What's her deal now?

Two shows come to mind, My Sister Sam... (and other things)

I liked that show to and was so disappointed when it was cancelled. Then saddened years later when I saw that the younger sister had been killed by a stalker and that's what ended the show.

The little sister on "Family Matters" did go on to do porn. I saw her on tv recently talking about it. She said something to the effect that at the time she didn't think it would impact her career because she didn't think many people would know about it or see it. She said it destroyed her acting career and she is trying to overcome her time in porn and re-establish herself in acting.
I'm firmly planted in denial

"Watch Your Mouth." This show might have been late 70s/early 80s. I know it came on PBS. It was about a bunch of (old-lookin') high school kids. Sarah Dash (Labelle) was on it. Can't remember if she was a student or teacher. What I do remember is that she sang the theme song (which I can still hear in my head). Can't find anything about this show on the net not even at pbs.org. neutral

Soap was the bomb and so was Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, but, I don't think that was the 80s.

More like late 70s.

Boy, I'm telling my age here.

Anyone remember "It's Your Move" with Jason Bateman? It was one of the funniest, underrated shows of the 80's. They only made 18 episodes but if you search the net, you will see that it is still a cult favorite.

I remember this show! I LOVED it and was so bummed when it got cancelled. One

I think I saw EVERY episode of that show! It was a spin-off of "Silver Spoons" (another blast from the past, eh?). I loved it then, but I was pretty young. I'd probably think it was crap now!

I remember as a kid, my parents watched it, and most of it flew right over my head. Then, when I was a freshman in high school, a local channel ran it in syndication. I became completly hooked, since it was funnier than ANYTHING that was on TV at the time.

Hard to believe "Benson" was a spin-off of this show, eh?

True, but it was so completely different from "Soap". Just a completely different type of humour. It was pretty hard to believe that the events in "Benson" occurred in the same universe as "Soap"

falloff

i loved how real Soap's characters felt...i'll never forget crying when Jessica told her sister she was dying....they played that shit for real....and then the next minute your laughing about something silly....I dont think any show before or since has walked that fine line of comedy/drama.....well, actually..Ally McBeal pulled it off for a couple years...Anyone remember the episode where Hale Joel Osmond was dying of cancer? and ling (who never showed an emotion beyond evil) walks out of the hospital and starts crying?

TVland used to show "Fernwood Tonight". It wasn't that funny but I remember Martin Mull and Fred Willard on these bumpers for the late night programming of obscure but loved shows called "Kitschen". They are funny togther.
