Modeling - any advice? I am taking my 12 year old daughter to meet with a modeling agency on 12/4.
This is something she has wanted for a long time. I have been reluctant for all of the obvious reasons. Then a friend of hers from school told her about Dynasty Models in Boston. She has done work for them before. Anyone in the business have any advice for us?

I hear the best advice is to not eat if you wanna be a model.

My number one piece of advice for anyone who wants to be a model is:
Be hot. But, seriously... Make sure the agency is reputable (you shouldn't be paying them a dime for pics or anything else). If she continues on with it, make sure she is chaperoned properly. There was a major scandal a few years back where it was discovered that the guys who were supposed to be chaperoning young models in Europe for Elite were hitting on them and taking them to nightclubs where there was drug use going on (not to mention the fact that they were underage and shouldn't have been in these clubs in the first place). Personally, I don't recommend this line of work as it has a short lifespan and when you're done there are really only two options: 1) Try to become an actor and never be taken seriously because you were a model 2) Marry some rich guy.

From a televisionwithoutpity.com recap of an America's Next Top Model episode:
"And speaking of never sleeping, the girls will be getting no sleep tonight. Because, like real models, they'll be all coked-up and made to give Donatella Versace a tongue bath."

Honestly,i met a few models hanging out in a club once, and they said they were models (I could tell to ) and they were so nice and not bitchy or nasty to me and my friends.....infact, as stereotypical as it sounds, they seemed a little lost and "empty" and they looked insecure (4 obvious reasons).....so much pressure I guess!
My girlfriend when i was 12 went on to become a catalogue model about 5 years later.....it was very odd seeing her in their and I had not seen her for about 4 years.....it was creepy!

My girlfriend is a model and has many stories of the sleazes she encountered while working various places, particularly Milan. She only does small-time work now because she was so disgusted with the fakeness of the big-time industry.
All I would say is WATCH OUT because it CAN be a VERY manipulative industry and girls are encouraged to do all sorts of gross things to further their careers.

I knew this guy would be up here. He's the modeling expert. I think he's a Producer, or at least stock holder in America's Next Top Supermodel. Anyway... what he says is spot on. Be really sure that you want to subject your daughter to an even more intense that normal environment of a self-worth based on appearance. And be prepared for rejection. Give her lots of love!!!! http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

But seriously...
I've dated girls who've modeled and I've seen the industry from the inside-out. I personally don't recommend it for anyone unless you're planning on using it to bankroll another profession (aside from acting, that is). There's a lot of evil in that world.
