The Tofurkey Verdict ok, so to follow up on my other thread about the tofurkey breast...
tried it tonight, with red cabbage and a mushroom-sherry gravy. it had none of that gelatinous goop around it, like i've heard the complete tofurkey does. the stuffing was decent, with wild rice and croutons. the tofurkey "meat" was also decent, a firmer kind than the boxed stuff. all in all, it was edible, but nothing to write home about. might be a neat alternative for a holiday dinner, but i like a good, creative veggie dish just as well. just thought i'd report back! oh, and... i almost bought a tofurkey at trader joe's today, but my boyfriend - who has tried it in the past and is a pretty amazing cook, to boot - held a quick intervention and suggested i might want to perhaps opt for a nice casserole instead. so no tofurkey for me this year!

One Thanksgiving I made beans & rice (three different types of beans: santa fe, carribian black and just a mix that I made from scratch and two different types of rice)...fresh sourdough rolls (warm), assorted veggies and dips, deviled eggs, pickles, olives, grapes, two salads (ceasar and garden), fresh green beans and corn on the cob...not a turkey (or tofurkey) in sight. why all those vegetarian things have to taste like meat actually, it doesn't taste like meat at all - if it did, i wouldn't like it. (for example, i don't care much for Boca Burgers - tastes too much like dead cow to me)

why all those vegetarian things have to taste like meat sometimes, like on thanksgiving, people who eat meat like to prepare things for their veggie family members/loved-ones/etc. that makes 'em feel like they're not excluded from the festivities - i guess stuff like tofurkey fills that need. myself, i mostly like to make veggie dishes and tofu curries - but i don't mind the occasional bocaburger or tofu corn dog. if they're done really well, they're foods i can share with my carnivorous friends and we can both enjoy. but it's nothing that i'd consider a necessity. gimme a good curry and i'm a happy boy.

whew!
I'm glad it wasn't awful for you! In the last thread I was raving about the Quorn "turkey" breast product and how good it was. Well, I'm sticking to that but....My BF brought home a box of their 'chikless nuggets' to try and I was Now, it's been 15 years since I intentionally ate meat, so my memory is sketchy at best. But, I think the Quorn nuggets just had a taste and texture that was a bit too close to meat for my comfort. After 2 og the nuggest, I gave the rest to my BF and just ate my salad.

I doubt there is enough alcohol in the world to make me eat Tofurkey. However, I'm willing to give it a shot... When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.
