Not nearly as intriguing as the thread title might suggest. No, this is just a two-pronged rant with absolutely no intrigue or merit.

First of all, I'm pissed about the Liverpool vs Middlesborough game.
How can a player be offside if he's put through by the opposition???? Perfectly good goal disallowed. Then a second 'Boro goal is given when at least one, maybe two, players were offside. If a player is standing in the middle of the pitch on the edge of the box he must be interfering or what the fuck is he doing on the field? If defenders are having to think about where he is and what he might do then he must be interfering.

Secondly, am I the only person who thinks The Cure are laughable? For some reason they are MTV icons this month. I think they're awful. The music is largely forgettable and often messily produced. The little video diaries of the fans gives a good indication of the band's crapness. I would put a pissed or mad emoticon here but I feel more like doing this

They're woeful.

I'm completely on board with your assessment of the Cure. Back when I was a 19 year-old goth-wanna-be, Robert Smith was someone I regarded as being the epitome of cool. Looking back with a (I like to think) more acute critical eye, I think he's a fairly ridiculous man and a pretty mediocre, lazy songwriter. The Cure has been around for at least twenty-five years, and yet (i.m.o.) they've only released a small handful of memorable, well-crafted songs. Since Disintegration at least, I think Smith's practically turned into an alterna-rock version of a vaudeville act. Every two or three years he churns out another dreary collection of undistinguished sludge and trots it out for the seemingly endless supply of gloomy teens with racoon-style eye make-up who'll always be there to provide him with an audience.

Just my two cents - I know some people take their Cure very seriously.

Plus I don't understand his criticism of The Smiths. Has he actually listened to the lyrics? If he really thinks Morrissey is all doom and gloom he must be a pretty slow-minded fellow.

Middlesbrough Football Club

The Cure are one of my favorite bands of all time, for so many reasons. I can see why someone could call some of their fans laughable, and perheps Robert's reluctance to change his appearance with age (let's face it, he hasn't aged well...), but they are still producing some damn fine music. I wonder if you've ever really listened carefully, as in my experience I'm ususally able to convince non-fans of their musical genius, even if they don't particularly care for that style of music. (Another example of this would be, I don't know, Willie Nelson. While his music isn't my first pick, and I couldn't listen to it for any length of time and be content, I recognize his talent for what it is.)

As for football, I tend to have a giggle at people who take any sports all that seriously. Kinda like you and the Cure, I guess.
