I had mine removed instead of doing a root canal...actually the dentist recommended removal over root canal for my tooth. He did mention the possibility of shifting and that the tooth that's right above it will shift downward now since there's nothing for it to bump up against...or something..Hell, I dunno...lol...but I went for removal simply for $$$ reasons. They yanked that sucker out of me with pliers or whatever, was a weird experience..lol

Good luck, hun... hug

that's pretty much exactly what my dentist said to me! and yes I do know what you meant by shifting etc...

I'm just worried about what will happen when it DOES start to shift...did your dentist warn you before he took your tooth out?

thank you, by the way hug

I had aback tooth taken out last week. I was in too much pain to wait for the swelling to subside and have the root canal. It feels funny but it don't hurt. hug

Feel better Natisse hug

Natisse, in my opinion the dentist is just trying to scare you to take the expensive option and have root canal. I know stacks of people, including my mum, who have had teeth removed and have not had problems.

If it were me, and the tooth wasnt at the front where it is visible, I'd get the sucker pulled out.

thanks Brett hug

I just wrote this whole big response but I accidently wiped it pout lol ...basically what I think I might do is get it out and in years to come once I've finished travelling I can get a replacement tooth or bridgework...there's no garauntee even if I did have root canal therapy it'd last anyway because the tooth by and large doesn't seem like it's worth saving...

I'm giving myself the weekend to think farther about it, still, but it looks like next week I'll have one less tooth lol (thankfully towards the back - it's a molar third from the back)

hug thanks...and you're absolutely right nod that's why I'm really trying to do some research about it. It is the money thing, yes, but I'm thinking farther down the track - I don't want to do anything I'll regret later no matter how far away

Hiya Tisse,

My mom had 4 teeth taken out about 5 years ago and didn't have them replaced as they were hardly visible unless she laughs really, but she has had no problems with just having teath removed, and she like you had an absys.

Could you not go to another dentist before handing lots of money over for a second opinion?

He just said it almost as an aside...like "Well, your top tooth usually presses against the tooth we're gonna take out, so it may shift a bit"...so far I've not noticed anything at all, though...it's been maybe 3 years now??

Oh man! I just found out I do too! I need a root canal and then a cap and crown on one tooth. And I grind my teeth so much I need a mouth guard at night...that alone costs $535 and insurance won't help!!!

Teeth are important though....so I gotta find a way to pay up sigh

nod I had an absessed tooth in the back of my mouth, and the dentist just said to pull it, he didn't even give me a root canal option. Actually, getting it pulled was a heckofalot cheaper, so in the long run, I probably did the right thing. It was weird getting the tooth pulled out with pliers, I was nervous as heck, but I survived it. lol Thank goodness the tooth was in the back of my mouth, where it can't be seen. I haven't noticed any teeth shifting, either, thank goodness for that. Dentistry sux, I hate dentists. mad
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Awww, I know, it sucks...check THIS out:

When I was 17 going on 18 soon by march, I was to have all four wisdom teeth pulled out (because of a problem interfering w/ the space of my teeth),in early February of 2003, which i went through bravely and had it done. Just when I thought the hard parts are over and done with, guess what?? I felt pain at the right side at the bottom all the way back of my jaw,....my mom called and asked the dentist about the pain I was having... and what was the problem?? That moron dentist left a piece of tooth he "thought" he pulled out, scheduled an appointment, and I was to get it out. The worst part of all?? It was done on VALENTINE'S DAY!! omg He's also very bad in joking too, (in other words, he makes insensitive jokes)
and on that very day he pulled the piece of tooth out, I'll never forgot what he said when it was finished:

"Here's my Valentine's gift from me too you... (he laughs) May it be a "date" to remember" wink

I was like neutral mad disbelief

Yea, I remembered it alright....mad So, yea,...dentistry sucks when U have to pay alot, and have insensitive morons like my dentist for surgery. To this day, I did not go to his appointments since. Even my mom understood and cancelled every appointment made. LOL nod So be careful for who U chose and how much ur paying it for, too.
