Detroit.....What's Happenin'?

This angers me to no ends...mad

Detroit schools are looking at closing 40 schools and 4100 jobs by the
end of the school year. Where is the money going??? Crooked-ass city officials have drained this city of it's resources, and now the kids are going to pay for it...we're planning on moving out of Detroit...not soon enough!!!

The skinny on the story is this: Detroit Public Schools are in a $150 Million dollar hole. Last year they pink-slipped 2100 school employees, now they are looking at much more. They say it's the worst school crisis in the nation and it's impact will be felt regionally.

BTW, the school board was supposed to hold a meeting at one of the HS's in the area tonight...but protestors were out in droves. The cowards cancelled the meeting, citing fear for their safety.

Case

Detroit is my city. I lived nearby for 5 years and I grew to love it to no end. But shit like this just depresses the hell out of me. Detroit is such a dying city. And it's so fucking sad because of all the good things and people it has to offer.

I love you, Detroit. And I miss you.

AMEN to all that brother! I feel the same...my wife grew up here. When she tells me the stories of old Downtown Detroit, it's truely depressing because it used to be so nice. Coleman Young was a crook, and Kwame looks to be in the same boat...such terrible city leaders for such a long time.

Exactly...he's preoccupied with sweeping scandal under the rug, scandal involving his promiscuity. We needed him to be a young man of high moral values, someone who could say "I'm young, but I'm not on the take...". Well, he's failed that test with a gigantic F.

The same thing is happening here in Cleveland, Ohio. The schools are not closing, per se, but MANY Cleveland school teachers are losing their jobs. In fact, Cleveland was recently named "the biggest, poorest city" to live in. Makes it damn embarrassing to admit that I live here. boxed sigh
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

nod You got that right, hon. I just wish that some of people who vote in the city would get their collective heads out of their asses and keep someone in office that isn't a CROOK! Look at what happened to Dennis Archer! That man was exactly what the city needed and he couldn't take all of the corruption so he left! sigh
This really, really scares me for the future of this city. What the fuck!?
Where are you guys thinking of moving, btw? Dearborn has really awesome schools.

Note to BUSH: "No Child Left Behind," my a**.

I really feel for Detroit Public Schools, they are getting shortchanged in the most extreme of ways. I hate the disparity of education between inner Detroit and outerlying suburbs in Oakland and Washtenaw counties that have stellar school districts. It's so imbalance. Yet, we want to yank affirmative action from the University of Michigan and other colleges?!

The same could be said for any major city populated with brown people, though. It's hard to believe that America would stand for such nonsense. Goes to show you that Bush is not looking out for anybody not living in the 'burbs.

We're looking at West Dearborn...we don't want to go too far (she doesn't want to move too far from her mom). I'm looking at the Dearborn High School district, which means west of Southfield Freeway and East of Telegraph...

nod hmmm The Detroit School Board Dilema does sound similar to Cleveland. In addition to more teacher layoffs, the CEO annouced some possible school closing, canceling of prgrams b/c levy was not passed.

Urban Education is going down the drain while the suburbs are still miles ahead performance wise. Needless to say, Urban Education is decaying in front of our eyes w/out an effective solution
