Sorry, but I need more to go on.
You have to pretend you want to talk about something at least, so I can take it in an entirely different direction.

ReturnOfDOOK

Sunny day, the Muppets are coming our way
http://www.sanluisobispo....048361.htm

To prepare for the upcoming Sesame Street Live shows, check out our A-to-Z guide to the childrens program

Patrick S. Pemberton

The Tribune

Like many people in their 20s and 30s, Chelsea Miller has fond memories of Sesame Street.

I loved Bert and Ernie, said Miller, who plays Jenny the lone human in the Sesame Street Live show.

I think I had a little crush on Gordon.

When Sesame Street Live (think Sesame on Ice without the ice) comes to the Performing Arts Center next week, hundreds of little kids are bound to go crazy, seeing their favorite characters up close.

Theyre superstars that are on tour that are coming to see them, said Tom Lieberman, creative director of the live show.

The show, titled Everyone Makes Music, features favorites such as Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster and Bert performing parodies of hit songs.

In the show, Jenny tells the Muppets that they can make music out of anything. And when her truckload of instruments fails to show up, the Muppets set out to make some noise.

Kids are encouraged to get excited.

Its kind of unfair to ask a 4-year-old to please stay in your seat when Elmo and Cookie Monster are, like, 10 feet away, said Miller, who also plays the Muppet Rosita.

Adults with young kids undoubtedly have their own memories of Sesame Street. So weve decided to create a list of some interesting facts about the show. But since we wanted to be educational, were also going to cite the alphabet.

A is for Amnesty International, which concluded that the Sesame Street theme song had been used in 2003 as an instrument of torture. According to the BBC, U.S. troops repeatedly blasted the song in order to break the will of Iraqi captives.

B is for banana. In one of Sesame Streets most famous skits, Ernie has a banana in his ear, prompting Bert to say, You know that you have a banana in your ear? Ernies response: I cant hear you I have a banana in my ear.

C is for cookie. Cookie Monster cant eat real chocolate chip cookies, because the oil and chocolate is bad for his material. So he either eats fat-free oatmeal cookies or rice cakes painted to look like cookies.

D is for death. When Will Lee (a.k.a. Mr. Hooper) died in 1982, an entire episode was devoted to Big Birds acceptance of his best friends death.

E is for evil. A spoof Web site called Bert is Evil featured photos suggesting the cranky, single-browed Muppet was involved in various nefarious deeds. In 2001, a photo of Bert and Osama bin Laden was taken from the site and made into a sign used in a Bangladesh street protest.

F is for feathers. The Big Bird costume on the Sesame Street Live tour is made up of 4,000 custom-dyed turkey feathers, which are hand sewn into the costume.

G is for garbage can, where Oscar the Grouch lives. Items the Grouch keeps in his can include a bowling alley, a goat, a piano, chickens and Fluffy the Elephant.

H is for head, which Don Music would repeatedly bang against his piano when he couldnt play a part correctly. When it was discovered that kids were imitating Musics head banging, the bit was retired.

I is for Its a Wonderful Life. Contrary to what some people believe, the characters Ernie and Bert were not named after the policeman and the taxi driver in the Frank Capra classic.

J is for Japan. Before he joined Sesame Street, Bob McGrath who plays Bob the music teacher was a teen singing idol in Japan, where he had more than 30 hit singles and performed before sold-out crowds.

K is for Kami, the HIV-positive Muppet, a character on South Africas version of the show. Kami was introduced to promote acceptance of those infected with HIV.

L is for legislature. In an effort to increase funding for school music programs, Elmo testified before the House Education Appropriations Subcommittee in 2002.

M is for maturity, which is conveyed in Muppets by their pupil size. Older Muppets are given smaller pupils.

N is for numbers. Paul Bendict (who later became Bentley on TVs The Jeffersons) was the guy who used to paint numbers on everything, including a number 8 he imprinted on a bald mans head.

O is for obsession. A few Sesame Street characters just cant control themselves. Some of the obsessions: cookies (Cookie Monster); counting (Count von Count); and cleanliness (Bert). Telly was once considered a TV addict, but that was considered a bad influence for kids, so he tuned out.

P is for ping pong balls. Jim Henson created Kermit the Frog with pieces of his mothers coat and ping pong balls he cut in half and used for eyeballs.

Q is for questions. One of Big Birds goals is to encourage kids to ask questions. BBs philosophy: Theres no such thing as a bad question.

R is for the band R.E.M., which performed its song Shiny Happy People as Furry Happy Monsters on the show.

S is for Snuffleupagus. For a long time, Big Bird was the only one to see his Wooly Mammoth-like friend and no one else would believe that Snuffy existed. But after a series of high-profile sexual assaults in the 1980s, Sesame educators worried that kids might hide important things from their parents, fearing adults wouldnt believe them. So other characters began seeing Snuffy as well.

T is for Tickle Me Elmo. In 1996, more than 5 million of these toys sold, making it the biggest-selling toy of the year.

U is for United Nations. In December 2001, Kofi Annan, secretary general of the United Nations, appeared on Sesame Street to show kids how to resolve conflict. In the show, he stepped in when Elmo and friends argued over who would get to sing the alphabet song. In the end, they formed a coalition and sang together.

V is for Vlas, Berts name in Russia.

W is for waiter. A grumpy waiter was the inspiration for the character Oscar the Grouch. His voice was inspired by a grovelly voiced cab driver.

X is for X-ray. Kids who own the Sesame Street medical kit can give Cookie Monster an X-ray, revealing what else? cookies.

Y is for Yoda. Frank Oz, the voice of Bert, Cookie Monster and Grover, among other Sesame Street characters, is also the voice of Yoda from the movie Star Wars.

Z is for Zoe, the girl monster created to complement Elmo. The character is named after a character in the J.D. Salinger book Franny and Zooey.

If you go
