I sooo want this to be a cool movie. I absolutely love the original one.
Tim Burton is probably the only one I could ever see doing this film he can put some nice darker nuances in it I bet. Great!! and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I'm looking forward to this, and I am going into it with an open mind. It will be hard though, because I think the original is a perfect film as is. Either way, it should be fun.
I don't know if this has been posted or not, but here's a shot of Depp

You know it's gonna be hard babe, 'cause Gene was so frickin' brilliant in the original. I respect Johnny though, so I'm gonna give him a fair shake.

He looks quite gothic...much as I like Johnny Depp, I really dont think this film needed to be remade. Trying to improve on the orginal with cgi isnt going to add to the enjoyment I dont think. The charm of the original movie is the fact that the effects were subtle and kind of cardboard cut out. This one wont have the innocence of the original imo.

The original wasn't supposed to be innocent. Roald Dahl apparently hated how kid movie-ish it had been made. Ever read the book? It's quite clear that it's supposed to be dark and even a bit disturbing. I can't wait! "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Okay.
I'll try to keep this short but Willy Wonka is one of my most beloved movies EVER and I have a lot of thoughts and opinions regarding this upcoming remake... When I first heard of it I was very, very ANTI the idea of remaking WW. However, because I am a huge Tim Burton fan and Johnny Depp fan, over the last few months I have begun warming up the idea and am actually now excited to see what Tim will do. I've decided to TRY to view this remake as a separate entity from the first film (which is what Tim wants anyway. I know he's not trying to 'redo' the original) and not even try to compare the two, as I agree with others that the original is perfect, and could never be improved upon and has a quality to it that is impossible to recapture. When I saw the JD photos of him as Willy I thought "Okay, this looks promising." Here are a few more pics I recently found that do sort of concern me regarding Tim's 'vision' of the movie and the characters -- CHARLIE BUCKET - A cutie. I like him. VIOLET - Violet in a tracksuit and sneakers? I guess they had to update but...eh. OOMPA-LOOMPA. WTF is this supposed to be?? As far as I can recall from the book Oompa-Loompa's are NOT outer space aliens with antennaes. I do NOT like this. I'm hoping this is a specific costume for when the OL's are in the WonkaVision room and isn't representitive of their actual costume. Very disappointing. AUGUSTUS GLOOP - Okay VERUCA SALT - the best one of the bunch, imo. I like it. She looks like a Veruca. I'm also concerned because: 1.I heard there will be no music in this version and I felt the songs helped make the original what it was (although I realize Tim isn't trying to "remake" the original. He is making his own "vision" of the book) 2. No Slugworth in this as far as I know 3. Christopher Lee is going to be playing Willy Wonka's FATHER. Huh??? Willy Wonka's father is nowhere in the book. What's the deal with that added character? I also hope Tim Burton doesn't feel the need to add any bathroom humor or too much cgi or over-the-top special effects. Too much of that stuff takes away the warmth and humanness of a movie, imo. I really really want to like this new version but I am concerned at the same time because I love the original sooooo much and a few things about this new one, I'm not too thrilled about. All that being said, I realize they're still filming and who knows what the end result will be. I'm crossing my fingers. I still hate that damn Oompa Loompa though.... [Edited 11/11/04 19:40pm] Try to keep in mind that as beloved as the original is to a lot people, they fucked it up. If the man who created the story wasn't happy with it, it's not good enough IMO. There just shouldn't have been songs, cardboard cutouts and sugary cuteness. I can't verify it, but I've heard Roald Dahls' estate would only allow a remake to be made if Tim Burton was in charge. Few more things I forgot:
Rumors are that Johnny Depp will either be wearing very bright, bright blue contacts, or maybe purple. WW has many elaborate costumes including a bunch of differents styles and wild colors of top hats. One of Willy's outfits include a Harlequin-esque costume that's supposed to be quite impressive. (someone that visited the set said that..) I also found some pics of the factory set that I will post later. Signed, SnowQueen the WW obsessive

Maybe to Roald Dahl it was 'fucked up' but I'm talking about my own personal love of the original. And yes I do realize the original movie didn't have that dark element/quality that the book had so I understand why Roald Dahl wasn't pleased with it. Again, I'm not talking about this remake not being "cutesy" or "sugary" like the original. What worries me is that this "revisioning" will include a lot of 'oh so hip current trendy references' like to cellphones and J.Lo and the internet and that kind of crap, or a lot of bathroom humor like so many kids' films feel the need to include these days, then IMO this new one will be the "fucked up" one. I have too much faith in Burton to worry about "hip" references or bathroom humour. [Edited 11/11/04 19:56pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with the sets, especially the within the factory. I think THAT will definitely be awesome. [Edited 11/11/04 19:59pm]
