i think it's egg that makes it non-vegan. bummer, really!

Yep, you're right. It uses egg white. I'm a vegetarian (not vegan however) and eggs and "E" numbers are my only vices that I'm having difficulty phasing out. I managed to 'weed out' gelatine though, so there's still hope woot!

clapping that's awesome! so you have managed to go without cheese? that's always the thing i hear people say they couldn't possibly give up. (mind you, i looooove cheese, especially really good stuff - i have no clue how i have managed to stay away, i should get some sort of medal for that! wink

Ooops! I probably didn't make myself clear, I'm not striving to be vegan boxed
Dairy products are an integral part of my diet, although I do try and void buying from sources which have been 'defamed' for the way they treat there animals sad , but it's difficult to always check so thoroughly sad sad

You know, I like Tofurky very much, actually. Though I've concocted something (or found the recipe somewhere? I don't remember where it came from) I think is better, and Tofurkies aren't very big, so I often make both.

Lay a piece of puff pastry (the frozen stuff. . .Pepperidge Farm is vegan, I believe) on an oiled baking sheet.
Take some shredded seitan (the White Wave chicken stuff works well), sautee it with onions and herbs (basil, thyme, oregano, sage. . .), and pile that in the middle of the puff pastry.
Make the the stuffing of your choice, and pile it around the seitan. You're making layers here, in to a little round mound. Make sense?
Pour brown gravy over your little pile.
Wrap another sheet of puff pastry over your stuffing and seitan, sealing it at the bottom, and cut away the excess. You can cut little shapes out of the extra and stick them onto the. . .um. . .Pile-O'-Vegan-ness. . .biggrin . . .to make it pretty.
Brush top with soymilk
Bake until puff pastry is golden brown. Or however you like it, really, since everything inside is already cooked.

This has been a bigger hit with my family than Tofurky. nod

Yum.

What are some of the better vegetarian frozen meals?

I once had veggie chicken nuggets by Morningstar Farms and it was just awful.

As far as taste goes, I think Boca burgers are very close to hamburgers. Be advised that Boca is owned by "Big Tobacco," though--it's a subsidiary of Altria Group (formerly Philip Morris Companies).

Gardenburger Riblets are also quite tasty.

Oh, I also do not recommend Burger King's BK Veggie. IMHO it fails both the "Does this taste like a hamburger?" and the "In any event, does it taste good?" tests. When I was a vegetarian, I ate it only because: 1) it's convenient; and 2) I wanted to encourage BK to keep offering a vegetarian sandwich (and encourage their competitors to follow suit).

those are exactly the reasons I've eaten it on occasion. but yeah, it makes me feel ooky everytime, so I basically avoid it now...

Out here McDonald's has been test-marketing the "McVeggie Burger." Unlike the BK Veggie, it's tasty and a fair imitation of a hambuger. Also, it's suitable for vegans, whereas the BK Veggie is not.
