The Star Wars Holiday Special

I just saw this for the first time and it's unbelievable.

Bea Arthur from The Golden Girls is the bartender at a cantina - she looks more like a man that ever. She serves a customer a drink by pouring it into a hole in his head!!!

Diahann Caroll is a singing hologram and she's wearing this silvery-pink wig which makes her look like RuPaul. Mark Hamill is wearing way too much make-up. The first ten minutes is just Chewbacca's family grunting at each other!

My favourite bit is at the end when Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia gives the following speech:

This holiday is yours but, we all share with you the hope that this day brings us closer to freedom, and to harmony, and to peace. No matter how different we appear, we're all the same in our struggle against the powers of evil and darkness. I hope that this day will always be a day of joy in which we can reconfirm our dedication and our courage. And more than anything else, our love for one another. This is the promise of the Tree of Life.

I don't know why, but it reminded me of the scene in 'Female Trouble' when Taffy tells her mother Dawn Davenport, that she's joined the Hare Krishnas. Maybe it's the robes which brought that to mind...

Then Carrie Fisher sings this song to the Star Wars theme, except it's like a schmaltzy sickly-sweet ballad. Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill both look at her with this gooey "gee, you guys" face. Carrie Fisher looks like she is in a K-hole.

It's the campest, weirdest piece of shit I've seen in a long time!

I remember seeing this when it first came out and I thought it was the shit, then I found it on video a few years back and enjoyed it as a grown up, realizing it was one of the most horribly campy, unintentionally funny TV specials ever made. Poor Mark Hamill was made up like a drag queen, Carrie Fisher was so coked up she always needed to be propped up against something or someone, and Harrison Ford just looked trapped in hell. And the Dihann Carroll "erotic fantasy" scene was just plain disturbing. And I've never seen C-3PO look any gayer than in that weird Japanese Boba Fett cartoon...he actually had a limp wrist when he walked! lol

If you can find this, watch it!!!

i warn you, you'll never be the same. it robs you of just a little bit of your innocence, just from the bea arthur cantina band scene alone.

There's a low-quality Real Media file here: http://atom.pganet.com/vi...ay/swhs.rm

Even on broadband it could take over an hour to download.

I've woken up still chuckling about it all. It really is that bad! lol

I knew it was bad straight away, seems like there is 10 minutes of 'wookiee speak' and no subtitles. I was like, WTF! nuts lol

It's all over Ebay on region-free DVD. I think I'm going to invest in a copy.

I've just watched the Diahann Carrol bit again this morning. I nearly spat my coffee out. Chewbacca's father (who is actually named "Itchy") starts getting really "stimulated" by the hologram's performance. It is hilarious!

Ahhh, The legendary Holiday Special!!! Who can forget all those great moments?

Chewie's dad getting hot to Dianne Carroll's disco number!!!

Mark Hammill wearing so much makeup, he puts Tammy Fay to Shame!

Jefferson Starship's Musical Number!!

Coked-up Carrie sings Wookiee Christmas songs, to the tune of the theme to Star Wars!!

Chewie's wife, Malla, watches a cooking show! Mmmm! Grilled Bantha! (and yes, that's Harvey Korman in drag!)

Chewie's son, Lumpawarump, watches cartoons! (technically, this marks the first appearance of Boba Fett in any form!)

Han hugs Wookiees left and right:

Let's not forget:

It was only more tolerable than Graffiti Bridge in that it was shorter and had commercial breaks.
