This thread makes me think back to December '03. I recall sitting in an English Literature class in college last year. We were reading a novel dealing with issues of racism and classism (Dionne Brand's San Souci and Other Stories [1988] -- if you want to check it out) and were engaged in a classroom discussion. The professor asked us to share our experiences with racism. The students in this class were primarily black (from various backgrounds -- working class to upper class) and every black, arab and latino child who raised their hand that day shared a troubling or traumatic experience with racism that stayed with them. These kids were students at AN ELITE U.S. UNIVERSITY from various parts of the country (the median age of this class was 21), yet, they still experienced racism regardless of their educational level, geographic location or social status.

A British semester abroad student (white girl), who was also a member of the class, heard all this and raised her hand to comment. She was shocked. She said, "I can't believe racism and discrimination was this pervasive in 2003?" She went on to talk about her home country England (with a typical white person's rose-colored disassociation -- you know, "I have black friends, yadda, yah.") The general consensus of the non-white people in the class (including the black professor) was basically like, "Well, believe it, girl."

I am sorry to here that. Trust me I know how it feels. But, it is not that I don't like ppl who are not Af-Am, it that the ppl that I choose to spend quality time with, share with, are Af-Am. Even though we all come from different background, socio-economic status, etc, there is a unspoken bond that ties us. It is something that doesn't have to be explained.

Guess I am just lucky that I have real friends and I can mix with all kinds of races, ethnics.. and I dont have a problem with that..

I dont judge people by their skin colour, where they are from or how much money they have or dont have.

Then this thread isn't for you. It's about those people who HAVE come into contact with racism/wealthism. I, for one, am finding the discussion interesting. Please carry on people.

hmm Where are you from? I thought the city I lived in was pretty isolated racially (about 85% white people) but to only know one other non-white family?

Wow.

You'd be surprised to find out how racially segregated American suburbia really is.

Probably not, no.
