End to Cervical Smears News out today indicates that we have developed a vaccine against HPV, the virus associated with cervical cancer. When administered to girls (and boys come to think of it the article didn't mention that  ) prior to commencement of sexual lifestyle this could eliminate the spread of HPV and consequently cervical cancer.
At last a realistic cancer breakthrough makes the headlines

oops sorry for the yay but i guess if it's for girls pre sexually active I've missed the boat

The thing that is awkward is that they don't strictly speaking test for the virus on a screening level. they rely on cell morphology - smear. Since, if you have HPV you don't definately get cancer. It would be a bit scary to tell someone that they are now hight risk but there is not a lot we can do. So I imagine that it will be introduced across the board. Although I do see other promlems too. lol. I feel silly admitting this, but I had no idea what a pap smear was up until about a month ago when I read a similar article on this lol.
