Yeah there are some free places but it depends on your country. I found a few for sending to uk phones a few years back

I text my girlfriend by texting her with an email address which is her phonenumber at her phone company.

I just checked and it's actually a little more then her phone number at her company. Maybe if you look on the company's website you can find the info.

Here is the address I use for texting:

(Her phone number)@mobile.att.net

if you're texting to the US or you're already there go to www.munsoned.com and then look for something that says something like.. "texting" or "Sms" or something like that. Its not hard to find. I use it all the time!
