There's some free ones out there too. AVG Antivirus is free, and sites like snapfiles.com have alot of free programs.

MrJoker

I use ZoneAlarm for my firewall. It's a good free program that even the people at TechTV used.

Norton and McAfee are shit. It's fucking bloatware and they don't detect backdoors and aren't even very useful as a virusscanner. Use NOD32 ( www.nod32.com ) or Kaspersky AVP ( www.kaspersky.com ) instead with internet monitoring because a lot of sites will dump backdoors on your drive without Windows or the other two crappy AV's even prompting you for an action.

As a (software) firewall the free ZoneAlarm ( www.zonelabs.com ) version will do, but remember a firewall is only as good as its user. In other words, if you don't know much about operating systems, software and when what is supposed to send data over the net you won't find a firewall to be very useful.

I had good and bad experiences with Zone Alarm and Norton. Both of them are pain in the asses to uninstall and currupt your registry.I've heard a lot of good stuff about AVG but I have yet to try it.

Of course folks, you got to keep in mind that just having an Firewall and AV isn't enough. You also should have anti-adware and anti-spy programs installed (Spybot/Adaware) b/c thoses programs catch what the AV and Firewall programs miss.

If youre thinking about purchasing some anti-spyware software, you should look over this page:
http://www.spywarewarrior...pyware.htm

It points out alot of so-called anti spyware programs that generate false positives to scare you into buying their program; Or even worse, actually install more spyware on your system.

I use McAfee Antivirus and Firewall because they run smooth, and aren't nearly as much of a resource hog as Norton. Norton is notorious for going buggy when you try to install a newer version of it. This problem has been ongoing for at least 5 years now, which is why I quit using it.

Ive only found this to be the case when i did not uninstal the program first before applying the new version. Norton's website tells people to do this, i just didnt read the last time i put the newer version on. hammer
Ive just put on the product on 3 computers today and ive not had one problem in doing so, suprised me after reading the coments above, i will have to wait and see what the coming days brings to see if any bugs appear....

nod What you are saying is accurate. I learned from experinece you need to do a complete uninstall of the previous Norton program(use the removal utility) in order for the updated version to be installed and functioning. So far, all is well once I got the damn thing to work.
