Forget the offer.

Look, I'm not saying that saturated fat and cholesterol are healthy. But anyone with half a brain knows how to balance a diet and stay healthy.

i wasn't even going to touch this topic but i got so upset reading it i feel the need to contribute...

i believe in the right to choose....choose to eat meat if you want...choose to have an abortion if you want...do i think either is right??? does it matter??? its your choice...you make yours and i'll make mine.

what pissed me off is the ignorance of saying its not ok to kill a 'defenseless animal' but an unborn fetus (THATS NOT EVEN A HUMAN YET?????!!!! what the hell do you think its going to turn into?? a book?? a tree?? i believe that as soon as the egg and sperm meet and the egg is fertilized its human) its ok to dispose of the fetus without a second thought. that comment is so assinine i cannot even wrap my brain around it.

i say...great for all of you vegetarians that enjoy your soy products and veggies. i don't. i don't like soy (yes i've tried it) and i only like 4 vegetables. i choose to eat meat...because thats what i like. you can do whatever you want and i promise i won't tear your head off and shit down your neck for your decision...i just expect others to give me the same courtesy...whether you like my choice or not.
you're only as old as you feel..............so how old do i feel horny

Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants.

in all fairness, please consider what some of us have said in this thread - being pro-choice does not necessarily mean being pro-abortion. you'll find that people who have given a lot of thought to the concept of killing typically extend that thought pattern to unborn life.

there's a disconnect on both sides - meat-eating pro-lifers and vegetarian pro-abortionists. seems to me that these two groups have not completely examined their conscience. but that doesn't necessarily make either of them bad people.

in an ideal world, we'd live our lives with the least possible negative impact on other lives. working toward that is always commendable. dismissing any efforts toward that is counter-productive.

Killing animals (and we humans are animals) for killings sake and/or for pure profitis a no no....and so are the ways some of em are kept

Different moral and ethical standpoints will always give out different points of view...It doesn't mean one is better than the other just we have different needs and wishes

One thing I don't quite get is why food producers make vegetarian foods tasting of meat confuse

where is the insult in this? my point is that there is a certain level of inconsistency in both arguments, if neither admits that there is a connection.

AsylumUtopia

I have the perfect solution to forever resolve the meat/anti meat argument :

Let's eat the vegetarians. After all, they are grain and vegetable fed, just like prime beef, and, by their own admission, not superior to sheep.

And before anyone gets on their high horse (or high tofo-horse-substitute) about this, it's a joke, ok?

A few other thoughts :

irresistibleb1tch said

excellent post! thank you for taking the time to honestly look at your position. much respect!

thumbs up! I should probably point out that I've only been doing this for a few years, before that I justified eating factory farmed meat on the basis that I had no other choice, and wasn't prepared to become entirely vegetarian. Lying to oneself doesn't work forever though, so I changed my ways.

redfeathers said:

My Dad worked as a butcher ..... I regularly go to our friends farm ..... I am an animal lover but I love eating meat too

I think it helps to grow up around a farm. You can see the animals being treated with care and often with affection, and also understand that their slaughter is part of the farming process. I spent all my childhood summers on a small family farm (my great-uncles'), so I milked my first cow at the age of 7, (vegetarians cover your eyes) and first strangled and plucked a chicken at 10. I've also spent many a fucking freezing night lambing and clipping newborn banbh's (that's piglets to you) teeth. So it's not all about killing animals or stealing their milk. It's mostly about caring for them as best you can.

steadwood said

One thing I don't quite get is why food producers make vegetarian foods tasting of meat

That would be for people like me, who will quite happily use a meat substitute if it is actually an acceptable substitute for the meat in question.
My favourite meat substitute, which I recommend to all, is Quorn mince.
I use it to make things like Spag Bol, Chile and Shepherd's Pie (or Shepherdless Pie, as I call it).
I have fed my Shepherdless Pie to meat eaters who didn't realise they weren't eating meat until I told them.
So there ya go!

Here's one that stumped a vegetarian friend of mine :
You are a vegetarian, you have cats and dogs, are they vegetarians too? Or is it alright for them to eat dead animals ?
He thought about it and said ok, you've got me there.
Later he said it's ok for his pets to eat meat because it's not fair for him to force his moral standpoint on an animal that is naturally predisposed to eat meat, and has no understanding of such morality.
A very acceptable answer, I thought.
So I then accused him of forcing his pets into cannibalism, as he feeds them tinned food, and tinned cat & dog food contains the rendered meat of pets which had to be destroyed, bought by the pet food companies from vets / animal shelters etc.
At which point he hit me. I think I deserved it.

I think everybody (particularly we meat eaters as we sustain the problem) should be concerned and disgusted by the practices carried out within the largely unscrupulous meat trade.
Apart from the millions of cows emitting billion of farts (as mentioned by CinisterCee) did you know :
- half of the world's grain produce is fed to animals
- over a quarter of the world's fish catch is fed to animals
- 60% of the grain used to feed our animals in Europe comes from the developing world where extreme poverty and famine are rife
- It takes 120 gallons of water to produce one Kilo of wheat but -
- It takes 5000 gallons of water to produce one Kilo of meat
- It takes 10 kilos of Soya protein to produce one kilo of beef, the other 9 kilos are excreted, causing nitrogenous pollution

So my conclusion :
Meat is food
Factory farmed meat is not food - it's a global disaster

And finally, thanks Dewrede for this thread. Hopefully it's given some people food for thought (yes, lame pun intended).

I now have another morality check to deal with - I just went to HMV and bought the Prince DVD box set. In the interests of promoting real music I boycotted HMV a few years ago, on the basis that they are the MacDonalds of music shops. Now I have succumbed to the corporate whores, because I wanted the box set and they are the only ones selling it. Actually, I'm a dickhead because I didn't even want the box set, I just wanted PR and UTCM, but of course the conniving bastards are only selling GB and UTCM separately, so if you want Purple Rain you have to buy the box set.
So I did. sigh err
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.
