Alright, I'm going to be controversial here at the risk of pissing a few people off.

Note: This is just in respect of the original Superman films.

I keep reading how people describe Christopher Reeve as a good actor and heap praise on the original Superman movie. I beg to differ. Whilst Reeve certainly looked the part he couldn't act worth a damn. He displayed absolutely no believable emotion in his role at any stage, even when Lois died. The movie was really bad and cheesey also. I found it embarrassing to watch now that I am not a child (1 week ago).

I know we all love Christopher Reeve and he has only recently departed this earth, but he was no great actor and this was no great film.

Therefore, the upcoming Superman film has nothing to lose imho.

Disagree. Reeve epitomized the Silver Age Superman. His performance as The Man Of Steel captured the iconic nature of the character, and the "super-powered boyscout" aspect to a "T". His performance as bumbling Clark Kent was also dead on. Never before had an actor so perfectly captured a comic character. Reeve WAS an incredible actor, and this film shows it.
The film is not perfect, as some fans feel, but its certainly not horrible. Hackman, while entertaining, is NOT Lex Luthor and Kidder is an incredibly unnattractive Lois Lane (and don't even get me started on Ned Beatty). That having been said, the film DOES capture the feel of the Silver Age comics quite well. Cheesy? Well, Silver Age DC had quite a bit of cheese to it. If anything, Donner toned it down. Superman performs miraculous deeds that are awe-inspiring, and the film depicts that as well as it could with the special effects technology of the time. I too have watched it very recently (less than a month ago) as I just showed the entire series to my future step-children. They were GLUED to the TV during the first film, which says something to me about it. In a day and age where these kids see CGI enhanced flicks with state-of-the-art technology, a 1978 flick still managed to wow them.

Interesting choice, it was looking like Jim Caviezel 4 a second, but going with an unknown is probably wise, altho' he's got some mighty big red boots 2 fill, and the whole world will b watching.

SINGER will come thru with flying colors I feel.

Chris Reeve will live on 4ever, SUPERMAN I and II r classics!

wink

I never read the comics and only new Superman from the cartoons and that tv show from the 60's with George Reeve. That may effect my perception of it I guess.

Still, whilst I agree that Christopher Reeve looked perfect in the part his acting is not strong. This is best summed up by his acting in the reaction to Lois death imho. Still, I do remember really enjoying the film when i was a kid so maybe i'm missing the point entirely.

By the way, I agree with your comments on that ugly scatter brain Margot Kidder as Lois. What the hell were they thinking?
