This is a Hallmark thing. I think the CEO there is required to create a new holiday every 5 years or so.

I think the CEO there is required to create a new holiday every 5 years or so. so are you getting your sweetest a sweetest day basket? it's kind of a catch-22 - if you get something, you're giving in to the corporate gift-guilt machine, and if you don't get something, you're a cheap-ass. dang, whatever happened to just getting your sweetest drunk and simply having sloppy, flatulent sex?

This is a Hallmark thing. I think the CEO there is required to create a new holiday every 5 years or so. hence why I don't get into the whole thing to begin with. i don't really care about valentines day either. i want to celebrate it, but always feel like i'm getting ripped off if i do anything to celebrate it. my partner and I do hang out together on these days...we just don't get into the present thing or going out to eat thing on these days. we try and make the birthdays more special and put in effort aronund those times (there's two) and keep the anniversary intact. oh and other little things of course. Moderator | Pill is the sweetest part of everyday, so I'm not sure what he could do different. In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

Just an FYI:
Origins and Facts About Sweetest Day Observed the 3rd Saturday in the month of October, Sweetest Day observance originated in Cleveland in 1922. Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and candy company employee wanted to bring happiness into the lives of orphans, shut-ins and others who were forgotten. With the help of friends, he began to distribute candy and small gifts to the underprivileged. On the first Sweetest Day, movie star Ann Pennington presented 2,200 Cleveland newspaper boys with boxes of candy to express gratitude for their service to the public. Another popular movie star, Theda Bara, distributed 10,000 boxes of candy to people in Cleveland hospitals and also gave candy to all who came to watch her film in a local theater. Primarily a regional observance celebrated in the Great Lakes region and the Northeast, Sweetest Day is gradually spreading to other areas of the country. People tend to take the Sweetest Day tradition with them when they move. Ohio is the top state for Sweetest Day sales, followed by Michigan and Illinois. Texas, California and Florida are among the top 10 states in sales. Over the years, Sweetest Day has evolved into a time to express romantic love and also to show appreciation to friends. http://www.theromantic.co...estday.htm
