LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Canadian-born comic actor Jim Carrey has become a U.S. citizen and said his decision to pursue dual citizenship was based on his love for the country that helped him attain his dream.




"This country has helped define me and make my dreams come true," said Carrey, 42, in a statement.


Nevertheless the star of films like "The Mask," "Bruce Almighty" and the upcoming "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," professed his pride at being born a Canadian.


"I have no intention of giving up my Canadian heritage, and all those who loved and supported me," said Carrey.


"My upbringing in Canada made me the person I am. I will always be proud to be a Canadian," he added.


Carrey, who made a name for himself doing outrageous antics on the early 1990s television series "In Living Color," became an official U.S. citizen on Oct. 7.

I am surprised he could keep serious long enough 2 say the Pledge of Allegiance at the Swearing in Ceremony!!!

Yes. I have cousins who are dual citizens (U.S. and New Zealand). They have New Zealand citizenship by virtue of being born in that country, and U.S. citizenship because their mother is a U.S. citizen. (They have since moved to the U.S., BTW.)

Gotta be careful with that, at least here in the U.S. If someone who is a citizen of both the U.S. and another country tries to enter the U.S. on a foreign passport, it's a federal crime.

Basically what I mean't I can have a British passport and a Canadian passport and use either to travel. I use my Canadian one, even when I have visited the USA.

If I want to go back home, I could go and live and work there, and of course visit all my family and relatives.

My children have dual citizenship through me.

This thread reminded me... Canada has always welcomed me as a visitor. I never get more than a documents check and a few routine questions. One border inspection at Niagara Falls went like this:

Canadian border inspector: "Where do you live?"

Me: "Indianapolis, Indiana."

CBI: "Where are you going?"

Me: "Detroit, Michigan."

CBI: "Are you just passing through?"

Me: "Yes."

CBI: "Okay."

This was less than one year after 9/11, and they didn't even ask for any ID or an oral declaration of citizenship. Wow.

OTOH, getting back into my own country is another matter. Sometimes they'll let me in with an oral declaration of citizenship and a few routine questions. Other times, I get the third degree. Whenever that's happened, I've been traveling alone and driving a sports car... I assume I get profiled as a possible drug dealer.

If Bush gets reelected, it'd be tempting to apply for Canadian citizenship and move across the border to Vancouver. Unfortunately, I'd either have to change careers or spend a year at a Canadian law school. And with all due respect, I take issue with any form of government that includes a monarchy, even if it's mostly symbolic.
