C-3PO Gets Inducted!!! from the official Star Wars website:
C-3PO Inducted into Robot Hall of Fame October 11, 2004 Who says robots have to play baseball or rock and roll to be inducted into a hall of fame? Carnegie Mellon University has inducted the classic droid hero C-3PO into its Robot Hall of Fame in a ceremony at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Science Center held today. To celebrate his golden counterpart's milestone, Star Wars star Anthony Daniels was on-hand for the event. ASIMO from Honda Motor Co., Shakey from the Stanford Research Institute, Robby the Robot from the film Forbidden Planet and beloved cartoon character Astro Boy were also inducted in this second annual Hall of Fame event which was created to honor legendary robots along with their creators. There are two broad categories of robots that will be honored: Real robots: Robots that have served an actual or potentially useful function and demonstrated real skill such as the robot Shakey for pioneering work in mobility and artificial intelligence since 1966, and ASIMO for using revolutionary mobility to help humans challenged by the barriers of their environments. Fictional Robots: Robots that have achieved world-wide fame as a fictional character such the unflappable and unforgettable C-3PO, a robot with human foibles that make him all the more endearing. Other robots who share the spotlight with C-3PO include Astro Boy -- a cartoon character created at a time when humans needed a robot with a soul for inspiration, and Robby the Robot -- a movie prop so unique that the movie prop became a movie star and set records in movie merchandising. A panel of experts, including science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Director Rodney Brooks, Silicon Valley icon Steve Wozniak, and founder of the International RoboCup Federation Minoru Asada, chose robots in each category to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Among the recipients honored last year was astromech hero, R2-D2. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. Wonder when Data from Star Trek will get inducted? Has the Robot from Lost In Space gotten in? Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9) | |
