Helping your kid with their homework

Ok...the thing I dread the most is when my daughter comes home and asks me, "hey, mama, do you remember how do to do algebra?" At that moment, I begin to pray that my daughter doesn't think i'm some idiot because I can bearly spell a;gebra. She never asks for help in English or subjects I KNOW I can help in.

Does anyone else feel like an idiot when their kid asks for help with homework?

I have a friends daughter that just turned 14. She asked me for help with her math, I had to tell her when she gets to algebra 2, shes on her own.

It made me feel pretty stupid lol

now, you did that on purpose, didn't you?

biggrin

PS:

You're not an idiot. From what I've seen
from you on the org, I think that you're
very much capable of giving your girl all
the advice and help she needs.

Besides, all parents I'm sure dred the
day their little one comes up to them
and starts about algebra.

I mean, when people are done with school
they all think "thank god for that! now
I've done it and will never have to do
it again".

Until your baby goes to school, that is!

Oh man, I HATE it when my future step-daughter asks for help on word problems! I SUCK at math, and I ESPECIALLY suck at word problems. I just send her to her mother.

I'm always reminded of the Far Side cartoon that showed Hell's library, and it was all books of word problems!

Rhonda, I'm with you on this one. hug It's definitely the part of the day I dread most. Especially since my daughter gets so stressed about homework, which stresses me, which stresses her more....

Excuse me, I'm a little stressed here.

the web has incredible tools at anyone access to help

so we search and learn together... what better way to show them how life is about constant learning and that adults are NOT perfect

My 11 year old son is the opposite in that he wont let me help with his homework neutral I love maths and know alot about Algebra,as i've studied it recently in my computer engineering course, and he just say's "no, go away, your too scary!"
He passes, but i can't get him to even show me what he's doing. So i go and hassle his teacher and find out what they're doing.I must be a real pain; but i just wanted him to do well. sad He's doing well without my 'scary' fanatical Algebra homework help, and it shits me! He gets me to do the build something out of cardboard projects which is something i s'pose. confused
~PClinuxOS~ yes I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ... thumbs up!

I think I was pretty lucky when it came to getting help for homework.

Mom - Treasurer/Accounting
Dad - Engineering teacher
Stepmom - Librarian/Public speaker
Stepdad - Social Studies teacher

Only thing I wasn't good in was phys.ed lol

I'm pretty good about helping my kids with homework...of course my oldest is only in the 4th grade. eek
Seriously, he asked me what the "mode" of a series of numbers were the other day...I don't remember even hearing that word before. confuse
We searched it on the web, and got the answer...

BTW, a "mode" of a series of numbers is the number which appears most often.
3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 8, 12, 154, 8 *MODE* = 8
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

after studying math for many years and being told about how i'm going to use it in everday life and then actually getting to my everyday life and never needing a damn thing i learned in math, i plan on telling my children that math is useless. I'll say that they should try and do well but don't sweat it because they will never ever need calculus, trig, or algebra 2. ever.

that being said, if they need help with their homework i'll have to hire a math tutor because i am not trying to have my child fail math because i tried to help them. dunce
