The best way to make garlic bread is..

Heat up a pan to medium heat... take about the amount of butter you would spread on a slice of bread, put it in the pan and try to evenly coat the middle in about a bread slice-sized area (use a knife to spread around the pat)... drop in a slice of bread... let it get brown, almost burnt....remove from pan....and put on some garlic powder, and/or slice a garlic clove in half and rub it around the top of the warm bread.
It's also tastes very good without the garlic.

I don't expect replies I just thought I would pass on the news in case anyone loves garlic bread as much as I do. smile

I make this all the time...though so often I cheat and do it premade...never as good.

Though I find it interesting you butter the pan first. Doesn't that create more mess? I normally predo a butter spread with soft butter and garlic (cloves or salt) and spread it on the bread. and bake it in the broiler and check every 30 seconds.

That's garlic toast, which I love... drool...

But garlic bread, I just make it by buying a fresh sourdough or Italian loaf, cutting it horizontally, putting dabs of butter throughout the loaf then sprinkling garlic salt or garlic seasoning somewhat liberally...closing it up, wrapping it in foil, then leaving it in the oven for about 10 minutes or so...

mg, I'm hungry.. confused

here is the recipe I use when makinfg homemade garlic bread....it takes longer but it's well worth it .
1tbsp. shredded Chedder Cheese 1/2 tps.minced onion(the white part only)
2tbsp. shredded Monteray Jack Cheese Dash Salt
2tbsp. grated fresh parmesan cheese 2tbsp.butter
1tsp. chopped fresh parsley 1/2 clove of garlic
1/4 loaf of french or italian bread

1. preheat the oven too 450 degrees F
2. Use finely shredded chedder and Monteray jack cheese for the recipe
3.Add the parmesan, parsley, onion and salt to the cheese blend
4.In a large frying pan or skillet, melt the butter over low heat
5. Add the garlic to the butter.Be sure the heat is very low or the garlic will scorch and become bitter.
6.slice a loaf of french bread in half, then cut one of the halves length wise through the middle
7.Take that quarter of the loaf of bread and invert it,face down, in the butter pan.The bread will soak up some of the garlic butter. Be sure the entire face of the bread is coated with butter.
8. Brush the crust of the bread while it sits in the pan face down.
9.Put the bread on the baking sheet and spread the cheese mixture of the face of the bread.
10. heat the bread in the oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are brown. Give the bread a quike broil for 1-2 minutes just to make it crispier.
11. Slice it into 5 pieces and serve hot

tibits..
You may double or quadruple the recipe to use the entire loaf of bread, depending on how many are to be served.

Not tryin' to change the subject, but this is still a bread topic.....what about French Toast. I LOVE french toast...more than garlic bread. IHOP's stuffed french toast... drool And homemade "fancy" french toast. drool This is a fancy baked recipe, but most of the time...I just make mine the simple and old fashioned way....dipped in milk, eggs, and sugar...and fried in a pan.

Apple-Cinnamon Vanilla French Toast

1 loaf French bread or Texas Toast (remove crusts, 1-1/2 inch slices)
3-5 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
3 1/2 cups milk*
10 eggs
2 T. vanilla extract
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup sugar + 2 T. cinnamon + 1 t. nutmeg

Coat a 9 x 13 glass pan with non-stick cooking spray. Place two layers of bread in bottom - this should nearly fill the pan. Mix eggs, milk *( I use 1 cup non-fat vanilla creamer, 1 cup non-fat cream and 1 1/2 cups milk), vanilla and sugar. Pour half over bread layers. Peel, core and slice apples. Place on bread. Cover with remaining milk/egg mixture. Sprinkle with sugar/cinnamon/nutmeg. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Cook 1 hour at 325-350 degrees. Let stand a few minutes before cutting.

eek a whole site dedicated to french toast recipes: http://www.bbonline.com/r...toast.html woot! enjoy!
